VPN ACCESS and Vista Service Pack 1

I had a working VPN connection with Windows Vista, my computer encountered an
error and the resolution was to upgrade to Service Pack 1. I did and now my
VPN connection does not work. I can bring a laptop home from work (Windows
XP) and it will connect. Anyone have any ideas? I have gone into the
properties to make sure the settings did not get changed.

Re: VPN ACCESS and Vista Service Pack 1

I get the following:

Error 806 : The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server
could not be completed. The most common cause for this failure is that at
least one internet device (for example, a firewall or router) between your
computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing
Encapsulation (GRE) protocol packets. If the problem persists, contact your
network administrator or Internet Service Provider.

The only change made is the upgrade to Vista Service Pack 1.

Thanks.
Steve.

Re: VPN ACCESS and Vista Service Pack 1

In most cases, VPN error 806 is GRE or port 1723 issue. You may want to use
PPTP tool to troubleshoot it. This post may help.

I had already turned off my ZoneAlarm Firewall thinking that might be the
problem but it did nothing to help. Any other suggestions?

Re: VPN ACCESS and Vista Service Pack 1

Sorry, no I don't. I don't like ZoneAlarm. In my opinion software firewalls
aren't of any real use except for blocking unsolicited incoming traffic so I
just use the Windows firewall. Over the years I've seen so many problems
caused by 3rd party firewalls that I routinely uninstall them when
encountered. It's quite amazing how many networking problems this fixes.

Sorry, Me again. I can add that I use only Windows Firewall, no other
software. Can't even ping my office server.

Re: VPN ACCESS and Vista Service Pack 1

hi SKIHO,

please check on you router whether you have allowed port 1723 to pass
through. you also get this error if your router that you connect to is
blocking incoming port 1723. Also some routers support Virtual Server.
in that case you need to select VPN and allow LT2P or PPTP. Also when
your using a VPN remember Windows Vista Doesnt Support MS-CHAP Version1
as a Authntication protocol

Hope this helps

Cheers !!
