Printer sharing-access is denied

I have read and tried many of the posts. I have xp on a hp desktop with a
lexmark P4350 all in one printer attached. Is is shared, windows file and
printer sharing is checked. I have wireless Averated laptop xp, and a new
wireless Dell with vista home basic. I have added service pack 1 for vista. I
use windows firewall, Norton 2008 antivirus.
My two xp's work fine together and see and share the printer. Vista can see
and ping the HP and sees the printer but cannot print. I've downloaded the
updated driver for vista from Lexmark. I've added the local port, I unstalled
and reinstalled the printer software. I connect to the internet through a
Westel DSL modem and a Belkin router. My home network name is the same on all
machines. If I wait until I get to the print window of a document to find
printer, "Domain directory is unavailable" shows up. If I try to add a
printer on the network, access is denied shows up. I am ready to find an old
version of xp and install it on the vista machine.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and
passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you
have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer.

Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in
Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to
enable File and Printer Sharing.
Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small
Office Network.

RE: Printer sharing-access is denied

I have disabled the windows firewall on hp xp and dell vista. I cannot find a
firewall for Norton 2008. I have reinstalled the printer software to the
vista and connected the usb, it prints. I have reconnected tthe printer to
the HP and still access is denied. Both of the xps will print to it.
What do I do next?

How to add an XP-printer to your Vista laptop (wireless)

All,

Here is a solution to the problem.

I have an XP desktop with a USB printer directly connected to it. I could "see" that printer from my new Vista laptop (Dell) via wireless, but I kept getting the "Access Denied" message when I tried to add the printer to my laptop.

Here is what I did to solve the problem.

I set up the printer on my Vista laptop as a local printer instead of a network printer. To do this, start by going to the XP computer that the printer is connected to and jot down the computer name (not computer description) for that PC. Then find the print sharing name for the printer, under the sharing tab on properties.

Then, add a printer on the Vista laptop. When prompted, select local printer, local port. Type the \\computername\printer values, using the names you recorded earlier.

Good luck.
