Internet disconnects with broadband after computer is idle

A few weeks ago I've noticed that when waking my computer up it no longer
regains connection to the internet. The Network icon in the lower right
corner says "Local and Internet", yet neither Internet Explorer or Firefox
will go to a website. This is on my desktop computer running Vista x64
Ultimate. It is also running the SP1 beta, but it has been installed since
it was released. My laptop is running Vista Home Premium and it finds the
Internet just fine upon waking up, so I know it is not a problem with my
router, modem, or cable service provider. I've chosen "Diagnose and Repair"
but it doesn't find any issues. Unplugging and replugging the Ethernet cable
from the computer does not help either. I've even went as far as disabling
the ethernet and re-enabling it to see if it regains connection, but with no
luck. I've also changed my power settings to never turn the monitor or
computer off, thinking maybe the sleep and hibernate mode was causing it to
go crazy. Even by changing these settings, it still loses connection. The
only solution I've found is that I have to restart the computer. Upon
restart, it will go to a website. What could be causing this? It's odd that
the computer thinks it's connected to the internet, but nothing is coming in.
Please let me know what I can do to alleviate this problem, as it's a pain
having to restart the computer everytime I sit down at the desk.

Try to uncheck the power saving of the Network Card. It should be in the
TCP/IP properties.

Indeed the ethernet controller property window had powersave turned on.
Thanks a million! Hopefully this solves the issues. While I have your
attention, is there a way to get access to drives on my home network? I have
multiple hard drives on my desktop and I'd like to be able to access them
from my laptop. I can access hard drives that don't have the C: partition on
it. The hard drive that has my C: partition also has a few other partitions
that I'd like to be able to access. As stated in my original post, the
laptop is using Vista x86 Home Premium and desktop is using Vista x64
Ultimate. I've read issues on networking between XP and Vista. Below is a
post I made on another forum but no one had any suggestions:

I have the laptop set up as wireless and the desktop as direct connect to
the router. I set up a home network so I can access my drives from either
machine. I can access two desktop drives from my laptop, but it won't let me
access some of the other drives. From the desktop, I cannot access any drives
on the laptop. The drives that it won't let me access says

"\\Buenings\My Music is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.

Access is denied."


Why would it let me access some drives and not others? I have the Network
Discovery amd File Sharing turned on. All other items are turned off,
including Password Protected Sharing. I followed the steps of "Set up a
connection or network" and it is set up as a Private Network. Let me know
where things may be goofy or things to check. I'd like to get this going
correctly if possible. Thanks!!!!

Well it appears that even with the power save turned off on the network card,
it still loses connection after a little while sitting idle. Any other
ideas????
