Vista is slow accessing network shares

We are running a Windows 2003 AD network connected with about 200 windows xp clients and 10 Vista Business. XP users are no facing problem but accessing/copying/moving files from shares on Vista is very very slow. For example when vista users try opening the network drive, it takes upto 30 seconds to 1 minute. This is not the problem with any of the XP computers but with all Vista computers.

Any idea what is going wrong?

First of all you must try disabling antivirus and/or security suites installed on all Vista computer and see if it works. BTW, are all vista running with same Antivirus program? Apart from this, just try following the below steps which I got from while Googling:
    • Disable IPV6
    • Disable offline files (on by default)
    • Run this as an admin on client: net localgroup "Administrators" "Local
    • Service" /add
    • Disable differental compression on the client
    • Disable auto-tuning

RE: Vista is slow accessing network shares

Hello Pax Thien, I have been through this problem earlier and fortunately managed to fix the same. Here is what you need to do. Go to Start menu and type “Offline” in the search field. Among the results, click on green Offline Files link and click the disable button. Now open Control Panel , click Add and Remove Programs, click Turn off Windows features. Here just uncheck Remote Differential Compression.

Once done, you also need to disable auto tuning and IPv6. Now open command prompt and run the following command:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

That’s it. Problem will be solved.

Vista is slow accessing network shares

I am running Vista business at work, on a HP laptop. I am experiencing a major problem accessing files on network drives. It takes forever to open a file from the domain's network drive, or somethings it just hangs there (such as I open an excel file, it will just show as "Not Responding"). Surfing the web is very fast, so not sure what's wrong with the network on my computer.

I did these already as someone suggested:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
    Disable IPv6
    Disabling Remote Differential Compression

    but wouldn't help at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After wasting so much time installing Vista SP1 and hotfixes, which totally have no help at all to the problem, I finally found the right solution.

To those who had the same problem, try changing your network adapter from 100mbps full duplex (mine is default originally) to Auto instead. That solved the slow access problem right the way.

This setting should be changed under the device properties via Device manager.
    1) Right click on "Computer" under the start menu and select "Properties".
    2) Under the "Hardware" tab, Select and open "Device manager"
    3) Click the plus sign next to "Network Adapters"
    4) Right click on your NIC and goto Properties
    5) Click on the "Configure" button. Choose the Advanced tab, and look for an item that mentions "Duplex & Link speed". Change it to "Auto".
