Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to Inte

I have a wired router connected to a combination wired/wireless switch (both
are LinkSys and pretty old). The PC in question has a wired connection to the
switch. In the Network and Sharing Center, Vista sees two Networks: Network
(private) and Unidentified Network (public), but both have the same IP
information. Both also say local and internet access, but I cannot connect to
the Internet. Disabling one of the active connections (one of the fixes
suggested by Windows) causes all network connections to be disabled. I have
tried resetting the router and switch, renewing the DHCP lease and resetting
the network adapter to no avail. The most frustrating aspect of this problem
is that it is intermittent. Sometimes, without apparent reason, the computer
will "just work." There is another Vista PC also with a wired connection to
the switch that has no trouble connecting to the internet and correctly sees
only one network. Please give me some suggestions on what could be causing
this problem. Thank you!

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

Well, now it's working. I went to the Device Manager and uninstalled the
network adapter. Vista automatically re-installed it and then when I repaired
the connection in the Network and Sharing center everything worked. Vista is
correctly seeing only one private network. I swear I have done this before
and it didn't fix it, but this time it did.

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

I recently formatted and reinstalled Vista Premium because of some
other issues. This fixed the multiple networks problem for the first
few weeks and now its happening again. Seems like its after I wake the
computer up and my wife was logged into her account prior. I fix it
the same way as the rest of you, disable and reenable the nic.

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT MICROSOFT HAS CONTINUED TO IGNORE. AFTER AKING FOR
HELP FROM MANY FORUMS, THEY ALL SEEM TO POINT AT EACH OTHER AND SAY IT IS
'NOT OUR PROBLEM'. MY SYTEM RESPONDS AS LISTED ABOVE AND IT HAS BEEN WEEKS.
WHAT IS UP MICROSOFT? WHY NO HOT FIX? WHERE ARE THE TECH'S TO HELP US? NOBODY
IS TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THIS ISSUE, YET I PAY FOR IT EVERYDAY. THERE MUST BE
A SOLUTION TO THIS MESS...AND NOT: "IT IS THE 'OTHER GUYS' PROBLEM.

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

I have the same problem with the phantom ghost "unidentified network"
sabotaging my internet connnection. Then I have to disable it and repair the
connection. Everything is fine until I reboot and none of my changes have
stuck. I have a brand new Dell with Vista Ultimate and Trend Micro PC cillin.
I had to reset my computer to factory setting TWICE in the last week to fix
this damn persistent bug. I suspect iTunes is the culprit. Both times it
happened after installing iTunes. I have decided not to reinstall for a
while and so far everything is fine.

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

I found the unidentified network was a few persistent routes
Drop to a command prompt

type ROUTE PRINT

in normal situations you should only have 1 Persistent route

this is what I had
Persistent Routes:
Network Address Netmask Gateway Address Metric
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.120 Default
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.254 Default

I simply used ROUTE DELETE 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.120
disabled and enabled my NIC and all went back to normal.

you may need to delete any IPV6 routes also.

You would think that microsoft would have the stupid diagnose tool
actually investigate the routing table!

I have the exact same problem, and now I think of it, it appeared after I
installed I-tunes too. Has anyone had any luck after uninstalling I-tunes?

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

Great, but it didn't quite work on my machine :(
so i got pissed off with it and disabled the IP4 instead, this made it throw
a little hissy fit, so i ran the magic 'diagnose and repair' which fixed it
finally!
I still have no clues as to why it stuffed up, and would like some answers
when you find out, or better still a patch?
Thanks

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

random thought - did you also install Apple's Bonjour network piece?
Apple has been installing things by default other than I-tunes and
you have to check carefully.

Yeah, found Bonjour, removed it, no more problems!. Part of ITunes

But why does Bonjour do this to Vista?

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to

glad this is resolved. I don't know why Apple insists of installing
unneeded software.

Re: Vista incorrectly sees "Multiple Networks" & can't connect to Inte

This is an independent website from Microsoft. Therefore, Microsoft
does not monitor Forums like this one. In order for Microsoft to be
aware of issues like this, a support incident must be registered with
the Support team.

In some cases, Microsoft employees may stumble with a posting like this
and forward to the appropriate team. But that does not happen often
since there are so many posting in the Internet. In this case, you are
in luck so … I will contact the appropriate team and make them aware of
the issue. This does not mean that a hotfix will be available right
away since this will take time to replicate the problem and analyze the
cause. But we will do our best to investigate the issues.

Gladys I. Rodriguez
