Internet connection, via wireless router, but not WEP protected

I have got a Home network setup in one room with 1 laptop that is running Windows XP and connected to internet via the linksys router and modem. In another room I have a Acer laptop that is running Vista and has wireless. So, when I connected up my router (given to me by a family member, no software, just router, and mains adapter), and switched on my Acer laptop in the other room, I was able to connect to my Linksys Router, and gain access to the internet without any security whatsoever, no wep key or anything. My issue is, i would like to add security to my network to stop other people in my building gaining access, or using my connection without my permission. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks

You will need to install Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)/Wireless Provisioning Services Information Element (WPS IE) Update on your Windows XP from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357. WEP is not usually safe and you should use WPA2 or maybe WPA. After that log into the router and then change the admin password, the default SSID name from Linksys to something else and then go to setup WPA security.

So, I have visited that url address on my windows xp machine and installed the XP hotfix properly in their. The issue for me is now that how do I log into the router that I have? I am not able to find it anywhere in my connections. Can anyone tell me detailed steps to log into the router? Thanks

    Follow the below steps:

    1. Unpack the router and plug it into a power source.
    2. Connect one end of the network cable to the computer’s wired network adapter and connect the other end to the wireless router (in any port that isn't labeled "Internet," "WAN," or "WLAN").
    3. Open your web browser and type the address of the router’s configuration webpage. For most routers, the address to the configuration webpage is either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1. The following list provides information about how to access the webpage for some of the most common routers.
