    Mac to PC connection problem

Hi, I have a Windows XP as well as a Windows Vista running laptops connected to my home wireless network through Linksys WRT54G router. Couple of days ago I bought a brand new Imac PC came pre-installed with OS X 10.4. I connect this as well on the same network. Enabled file sharing on all computers.

Now the problem am facing is my XP laptop is able to see connect both Vista as well as Mac computer, but at the same time when I search from Vista, it can only connect to XP and not MAC. While connecting to MAC it shows me a login box which never accept my correct password and username.

    Any help please?

There are few important things you need to be sure for creating an effective network and file sharing, and those are:
    • Remove all third party firewalls.
    • Disable Antivirus.
    • Username/password should be same on all computers on network.
    • Allow File and Printer sharing in windows built-in firewall, also put them in firwewalls exception list.

Apart from these, when you try connecting operating systems like MAC OS X from windows (vista) there are few important settings that need to be made in Vista. Here are the same:
    • Go to Start, click RUN, type “secpol.msc”, press Enter
    • Click Local Policies > Security Options
    • Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and double-click it to get its Properties.
    • By default Windows Vista sets the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only".
    • Use the drop-down arrow to change this to "LM and NTLM – use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated".

That’s absolutely correct Janos, but afaik Windows Vista home premium doesn’t have this tool by default. So to make it in Vista, you need to make this small change in registry:
    • Run the registry editor and open this key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
    • If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named “LmCompatibilityLevel”
    • Set the value to 1
    • Reboot
