Network and sharing center freezes, server execution failed

Ever since I first started my computer with windows vista I have had a red x
over my network icon and it says connection status unknown: server execution
failed. Also my network and sharing center freezes when i try to start it,
and i have to use task manager to shut it down. I have seen a fix for this
problem but it only works with versions higher than home basic vista
versions.(which I have home basic) if anyone has an idea so I can fix this,
it would be greatly appreciated.

Basically the link led to a website that literally said anyone with vista
home(which is mine) is ******. the only solution is available to those who
have the business version or higher. I don't have the money for a higher
version. It doesn't seem fair....

boot up your machine in safe mode by hitting f8 when you start up your machine, choose safe mode with commands, then enter the command
net localhost "Administrators" "Local Service"/add
That worked for me and I have home premium

log in to your computer in safemode with commands.
enter the command
net localhost "Administrators" "Local Service" /add
It worked for me and I have home premium

This reply corrects the command to fix this problem and also provides
all the steps necessary to run it.

1. Restart Vista.

2. After your computer's BIOS screen ("press F2 for Setup," whatever)
displays, keep pressing F8 until you see Vista's startup options screen.

3. Run "Safe Mode with Command Prompt."

4. At the Safe Mode command prompt type

net localgroup "Administrators" "Local Service" /add

and then press ENTER.

You should see a "The command completed successfully" message.

5. Type

exit

and then press RETURN. This closes the command window.

6. Restart Vista.

7. When Vista has restarted, log in and try to display the Network and
Sharing Center. On this laptop, that command fixed the problem
discussed in this thread: Now its wireless adapter icon reflected its
connection to the world, and the Network and Sharing Center opened,
populated, and displayed the system's network connections as expected.

Notice in the command statement that it's not "localhost" but
"localgroup." (If you execute the command as it was originally posted,
you receive an error message that clues you in on that by listing the
top-level syntax of the net command. The only option that starts with
"local." is "localgroup.") As musicians say on experiencing an epiphany
in the string section, "Viola!"

Windows Vista Home Premium, same issues as described above. Can't get solution to work.

Safe reboot with cmd prompt, followed corrected instructions as above, get error message:

"System error 1378 has occurred.

The specified account name is already a member of the group"


I'm mostly dead in the water. Wireless won't work, can't get the network control panel to open. If I connect cable, can have connection, though taskbar icon says not connected..

Any other suggestions please?

Vista Home Premium, Gateway laptop, internal wireless card. Accessing home linksys wireless router, also an office wireless system.

Main issue is that I can no longer open the netowkr and sharing center, and I have a red X through the taskbar icon where it should show connectivity.

Can't get in to troubleshoot the wireless network issue.

No clear inciting factor. No recent installs, though there appears to have been an automatic windows update in the last 24-48 hours.

Have done a system restore back before this, and back a week ago. No luck.

Have done the Administrator: cmd line prompt to try and fix, no luck.

Multiple restarts, safe reboots, etc., no luck.

Appreciate any suggestions. Thx very much.

I'm having the same issue and I've tried just about all remedies to no avail. I'm like mitchross71, tried all of these but nothing is working. Can't get the repair and diagnostic to launch either. I know my wireless LAN is working because my wife's laptop is connecting fine with none of these issues so it is either a problem with my WLAN card or a software or config issue. Tried the net localgroup command and it successfully executed but I still get the same problem. HELP!! Does reloading Vista fix this? That's about the level I'm at now short of throwing the laptop out the window!

Can you tell us what type of router are you using? Does this happen on any wireless connection or only this specific one? Have you tried to go to Network Connections and try a "repair" on the wireless connection. When you boot up from a sleep/suspend, half the time it doesnt pick up networks and you need to do a full restart to get any wireless functionality. If that's your problem, there's a hotfix for it, search for it on the microsoft site.

using a linksys WRT54GSv7 Broadband wireless router with Speedboost. This is only happening on my laptop (Dell XPS M1330). Wife's laptop is fine. I'm dead in the water for wireless right now no matter what I do. The connection icon in systray says wireless nets are avail but when I launch the "connect to a network" it "can't find" any.

Well I am of the opinion that you will have to make use of the Windows Safe Mode with Networking and see if that can really come as a remedy in your case. In addition to this looking at the older post of yours if the WLAN card of yours is dead then there is hardly anything that we can do here. Also if nothing helps then for sure you can try to go with the installing Windows Vista again and see if that can help. If you are about to throw the laptop then it will be better if you can try all the things that you can. Let me know about the same in your next post.
