XP Host - Vista Client On Adhoc Network

My first time on this forum and I bring a headache I hope you guys may
be able to relieve.
I've set up an adhoc network to connect my 2 pcs and all is not well.
My hardware is as follows:

_Host_pc_

Operating System - XP
Modem - BT Voyager 190 ADSL
Wireless Adapter - Linksys Wireless-G USB Adapter (WUSB54GS)

_Client_pc_

Operating System - Vista
Wireless Adapter - RT73 USB Wireless LAN Card

I am able to see the client pc on the host, along with it's shared
files. However, I am not able to access them (error message - network
path not found)
The client pc doesn't see the host at all.

Also, the client wireless adapter doesn't show in Network Connections
so am unable to configure.

Pcs are set up with same workgroup name.

Should any more information be required I'll be more than happy to
provide.

This will generally be a problem with a personal firewall. Accessing shares,
knowing what shares are there, and knowing the address ("path not found") can
all be interfered with by personal firewalls.

There are Vista specific issues.
* Set the Network Location Type to "Private". This implies that your
computers are secure, behind a perimeter firewall or a NAT router, and opens the
personal firewall for file sharing.
* Check / set "Password protected sharing" (PPS). Disabling PPS is the
equivalent of enabling Simple File Sharing, in Windows XP.
* Setup shared folders and printers. If you enabled PPS, you should setup
access for individual users. If you disabled PPS, you setup access for "Guest"
or "Everyone".

And Windows general issues.
* Make sure that NetBT is Enabled consistently.
* Make sure that name resolution is consistently setup.

OK the latest is...............

I can now see both pcs and share files! BUT can't access the internet
on client pc.

ICS is enabled on host pc

Reguarding firewall issues, that wasn't the problem as all firewalls
were disabled.

In order to see both pcs on the network I re-assigned ip addresses to
both adapters on the host pc by allowing automatic ip addressing.

Details as follows:

As previously stated, I can see and share files on both pcs though my
client pc shows the network as being unidentified. I cannot access the
internet on the client pc.

Your client computer doesn't have a default gateway. That's how you access the
Internet (or other networks).

Posting complete and unmunged "ipconfig /all" logs would be a big help here.

Yes, ICS is enabled on BLADESMAN but I'm unable to complete the Network
Setup Wizard.

I'm getting the error message :

Cannot complete the Network Setup Wizard
An error occurred during configuration of the network on this computer.

Configuration has automatically turned off ICS and firewalled the
connection.

OK, I'd bet that you haven't enabled ICS on BLADESMAN. Run the Network Setup
Wizard on BLADESMAN, and select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

OK, your problem is now not Vista. Your problem is ICS, in the host running XP.

I'm going to suggest that you repost your problem in microsoft. public.
windowsxp. network_web , where you can hopefully get help from the Windows XP
experts. You'll probably have to re post a lot of duplicate information, and
some of the people there (like me) will have already seen you here, but it's
still the right thing to do.

I know this might not be the right place but this is where I landed
searching for "RT73 USB Wireless LAN Card" and I would very much appreciate
if any of you could help. My problem is that I lost my wireless connection
when upgrading from XP Media Center ti Vista Home Premium and now I get the
message "Download and install the driver for RT73 USB Wireless LAN Card"
every time I start my PC but I can't find this driver anywhere and I don't
have any CD as my PC came with the XP Media Center preinstalled. Have you any
ideas where to find this driver?

This worked for me. I had a Vista (client) and XP Media Center (host) and I uninstalled Norton after tinkering for a while and it now allows printing. So, Norton is a problem child!

Plus any software such as this that you can't easily stop via the task bar is questionable in my book.

Ok, I have the solution for anyone who wants to connect a vista labtop to a xp host desktop via an adhoc network.

The first thing you do is go to network connections on the host. You should have a wireless adapter installed.

Right click on wireless network connection. Go to properties, wireless networks tab and add a network with security settings etc. You should look up how to do this thoroughly before hand (how to set up an adhoc network in xp). Connect to the wireless network after it becomes available on the host network.

Your vista machine wireless card will see it and will be able to connect to it.

If you want to share the internet, you must then run the network wizard on host xp machine on the LAN and enable ICS. Make sure you choose the first option which is " This computer connects to the internet directly...." After the wizard is done running, choose finish. Right click on the local area connection, go to Advanced and check the option to allow other users to connect to the internet through this computer internet connection.

The TCP/IP property setting for the LAN will be set to obtain the ip address automatically.

The TCP/IP settings for the wireless network connection
ip address on the host should be 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0

The TCP/IPV4 settings for the wireless network connection properties for the client should be
ip address: obtain an IP address automatically
preferred dns server should be set to the ip address of the host wireless network connection which is 192.168.0.1

Now the client should be connected to the internet. Turn on file sharing if you want to share files.
