Vista blocking access from Win2K system (can't ping or share files)

I am a new Vista user, with over a dozen years of Windows experience (mostly
Win2K). I am having some difficulties in getting Vista and Win2K (on
different systems on my LAN) to "see" each other so that I can transfer
files.

The Vista system can access and transfer files from the Win2K system OK --
both drive mapping and using the run|\\systemname\sharename work OK.

The problem is that the Win2K system can "see" the shares on the Vista
system, but not access them (network path not found). Also, I cannot PING
the Vista machine, by IP address or systemname. I have shut Vista's
firewall down, but something is blocking incoming traffic. Also, I set
Vista up to do "no password required" file sharing.

I have tried using the same user/password on both systems, but that doesn't
change either system's behavior.

Please, does anyone know what might still be blocking Win2K's ability to
directly access Vista files? As the Win2K system is my desktop, and the
Vista system is a laptop, it's much more convenient for me to use the Win2K
system to access the laptop, rather than vice versa. It's pretty clear I
need to change something on Vista to allow access over my LAN.

TIA

I would check the permission first. These search results may help,

RE: Vista blocking access from Win2K system (can't ping or share files

I have the opposite problem !

Once I specified a Windows Firewall IP Address exception for my Win2K system
(Windows Firewall with Advanced Secirity under Administrative Tools) I had no
problem accessing the Vista system from the Win2K system.

However, I still can't access the Win2K system from the Vista System. Can
you give me some pointers?

Re: Vista blocking access from Win2K system (can't ping or share files)

I went through the entire process again, and for some reason, it all works
now. Still not sure exactly what I has set incorrectly. Did discover one
thing however -- you cannot have a blank password if passwords are required
for sharing.

Now that it's working, I'm reactivating firewall options one by one.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Vista blocking access from Win2K system (can't ping or share f

Thank you Jay.

I chaged usernames to co-incide on the 2 systems and used the same password
on both. That seems to have resolved my problem.
