View Full Map for Network Map

I believe I have tried everything to get Network mapping to work (which I
can't) When I press View full map all I get is Windows cannot create the
network map. Everthing is enabled as far as I know. Network discovery is on.
Link layer driver is enabled in Group Policy, and Link-Layer Topology
Discovery Mapper is started. Is their anything I am missing? Thank you in
advance for your quick reply

I have the same problem, I just assumed it's because my machine connects
through ISA Server 2006.

I have just a simple Home network Cable modem, router two wireless computers
and two wired computers. It is baffling me.

What OS are the other computers running?

If they are XP have you installed Link-Layer Topology on them?

Ahh will give this a go, my other machines are XP and 2003, will setup
Link Layer Topology on them later and see what happens :)

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

I have two Vistas one premium, one ultimate and 2 Xp's. I did install the
Link-Layer on the 2 XP's and it did not change anything still can't view full
map. Also the premium can't view full map either. Is there a firewall issue?
the only firewall I am running is windows firewall besides my routers
firewall. Windows firewall has an exception for network discovery checked.
Thanks for your help.

Hmm, don't think it could be as I have disabled the Windows firewall and
ISA Server allows full internal LAN access...

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

Scott/DC187,
1. Can you please provide the complete error message?
2. Please check help for network map and see if it helps. (Help button on
top-right corner of network map window)

Windows or 3rd party firewalls do not affect Link-layer Topology Discovery
(LLTD) protocol (one of the protocols used by Network Map).

Thanks,
Sen.

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

Windows can not create the map. Responses from other devices on the network
are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network.

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

1. Can you please provide information about your wireless router? (brand,
model, firmware version).
2. I suppose your wired computers are directly connected to this router
while wireless computers connect wirelessly to this router. Do you have any
other hardware (like bridges, switches, hubs)?

Thanks,
Sen.

1. My router is a Dlink Dir-655 w/firmware 1.02
2. Wired is connected directly wireless connects wirelessly and I have a
linksys 5 port switch which goes to printers on the network.

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

1. Offhand, can you please unplug the linksys switch from router (i.e.
disconnect printers and switch from the home network) and see if it helps?
Obviously, this is only a stop-gap measure to narrow down issues.
2. Also, are you attempting open network map from a machine that is
connected over wire or wirelessly?

Thanks,
Sen.

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

Hi Scott,

I would like to work with you to diagnose and identify the problem. There
are a couple of things we could try.

- With the switch and the printers connected to it unplugged, can you also
disconnect the XP machines and see if the map opens up on the Vista machines?
This would help us know if the LLTD responders on the XP are causing the
issue.

- Since we already eliminated the switch as the source of the problem, we
can try removing the Router. The model of the Router with the firmware
version you mentioned, should be compatible with Vista. But yet, would you
try connecting all the 4 machines (of course if the wireless machines have a
wired adapter) to the switch, give them all static IP addresses say
169.254.1.x and see if the map opens on the Vista Ultimate/Premium machine?
This would help us know if the router is causing the problem.

- As a last resort, we need to enable some tracing and get the logs. For
this we need to run the following and get the *.etl files. Would you please
share with me your email id so I can send you these files?

In your original setup (with the switch and the router) copy the 3 files
attached to a folder in the Vista machine. From that folder from command
prompt run the following commands one by one
lltdtrace.cmd start lltd
maptrace.cmd start map

Now open the map on the same machine. Wait for a few seconds (say 20) and
close the map.
Again from command prompt run the following commands from the same folder
lltdtrace.cmd stop lltd
maptrace.cmd stop map
In the same folder you will find 4 *.etl files.
Please send me these files, we can work offline to share the files to
diagnose the problem

As per Microsoft policy I need to let you know that the sharing of these
logs (*.etl) may include some PII (Personal Identifican Information); but
this information will only be used to diagnose and resolve the problem.

Thanks!
Sri

Re: View Full Map for Network Map

Sorry took so long for reply.

I unhooked both xp from network and checked still no go. I failed to mention
that I also have VOIP Routers in the mix which I use basically as switches
nothing hooked to them. just going from wan side to dlink router on the wired
switch side. Anyway I unhooked them and voila it worked. I checked linksys to
see if they have updated firmware, but the firmware is only updated through
my VOIP provider. I checked with them and they are in the works on getting
them vista compliant (lets hope). I want to thank every one for their help,
it looks like I am going to have to wait until the new firmware comes out for
the mapping to work right. Thanks again and I will return if I have any other
problems I can't resolve.
