672MB at 196KB/sec Vista networking sucks. I sure hope MS gets this fixed. I too have turned off everything possible. After installing the patch to fix the hang on AMD CPUs. Before it would just lock up while estimating time. XP64 to Vista 64. Yes Bill has my money too. I have a 15mb/sec fiber connection and I thought I would never see broadband transfers faster the PC to PC. McAfee Security Centre came pre-installed on the Vista PC, I had disabled the Mcafee firewall leaving the Windows one ( and the router's one ) but it made no difference. Uninstall did the trick and an Internet speed test which had been producing nonsense results suddenly worked correctly too. Heaven knows what else was being slugged. Tom |

HEY EVERYONE Try this. Go to control panel and indexing options. Do not index your system drive. I turned off indexing on everything I could. When I did this the network took off. BUG? The hot fix that Stuart spoke of did fix the lock up but not the speed. With indexing off I am a much happier camper on the Vista. This article (just released) may address your problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931770/en-us "boe" wrote: > Sweet - I've turned off everything possible and even on an unmaged switch, > Vista crawls compared to XP. > > <IceburgIV@gmail.com> wrote in message > news:1174519021.988297.100060@l77g2000hsb.googlegroups.com... > > Doesn't help the situation at all, but wanted to let you all know I > > have seen the same issues. | RE: Slow copying files over network
Same problem here on a 10/100 network. I get les than 1MB/sec more often than not. I do get up around 8 or 9 MB/sec sometimes, but it's sporratic. I use Dreamweaver and I have my testing server setup as a mapped drive on my other machine. When I try and upload a file to the testing server in this fasion I have to wait 30 seconds or more for it to go and DW shows 'not responding' almost everytime right before it does transfer. On XP this was so instant I could barely see the transfer window. I mean, it's an .asp file less than 250kb. I tried prisaz's idea of turning off indexing and the first test I tried was with Dreamweaver. Didn't change a thing. Also, that would suck to have to turn indexing off. That's one of the features about Vista I like. Count me as another one with this issue. It's not even just annoying, it's absolutely truly pathetic that the windows team let vista ship with this issue. Microsoft needs a MUCH better beta team. |

I volunteered to beta but wasn't accepted - funny I found the issue within a day of testing - but I'm not good enough for the group that passed it out the door after a year of beta testing. I fixed my problem by making everything Vista. I tried: Vista to XP = slow XP to Vista = slow Vista to Linux = fast Linux to Vista = slow 2000 to Vista = slow Vista to 2000 = slow Vista to Vista = Fast either way. Except when play music or using Skype. Kinda obvious what Microsoft has done here isn't it. |

| Re: Slow copying files over network
Same exact issue here. Copying large amounts of files from WHS to Vista averages about 4-5 Mbps. I have a very fast system with SATA 3.0 drives, Gig NICs, Netgear GS108 Gig switch, and never had problems doing casual small copies. Only with large amounts of files. Tried all the things suggested above, and no luck. The thing that did make a big difference was to disable the Windows Firewall on both ends and Windows Defender on Vista. Suddenly the transfer speed started going up, all the way to 47 Mbps, then averaged at about 20. I then started another batch copy, and now it is doing about 8.5 Mbps. Totally frustrating to say the least. Copying in XP is way faster. Most definitely a Vista issue that Microsoft needs to address. |
