AWESOME....IT WORKED The only thing else I had to do is: after you add the local port, go back to the general tab and change the location to the correct location. this should be the exact same syntax that you put in for the local port address that you just added.... in my case it was......\\DESKTOP\Brother MFC-9700 Printer |

What's the real shared printer name? If the shared printer name has space between these three words, you need to add quotation for example \\computer name\shared printer name". The printer name is Dell AIO Printer A940, so a good thought, but the quotation marks didn't impact the outcome. Sigh... are both computers in same network/workgroup? is that the SHARE name of the printer? |

Hmmm...it's been a while since I looked at this (the last post I got on this was November 25th, so it's been a while since I set it up and the details are a bit foggy, but I believe so. I used the wizard on my desktop to set it up. It would be great to resolve this. Thanks. |

In the posts above, you say that you're getting " ...The network name cannot be found." That error is generally a personal firewall problem, on either the server (the computer with the printer) or the client (where you are). You might also review my version of the instructions above, which I think is more tightly written. And my instructions on networking a computer running Vista, in general, might be relevant too. |

I can't believe this worked! My family bought me an HP laptop with Windows Vista for Mothers Day and I couldn't get it to network with my Brother MFC 420CN Printer (connected to my host/desktop computer running Windows XP). After getting totally fed up I logged onto this discussion and there it was... Your fix or workaround...whatever you'd like to call it worked the first time and hasn't stopped working since. God put you in my path at just the right time :) If you were standing nearby when it all came together I would have given you a big hug...you rock! Thank you for taking the time to enlighten so many... |

I'm trying to get my laptop(vista home premium) to print . I have my printer (Lexmark x8350) connected to the desktop(Vista Ultimate) via USB and its shared. The laptop sees the printer cause its in the PRINTERS folder (in the control panel) and its says READY on it. Its also set as default printer . When I try to print a test page, It says page being sent to the printer,Then I get an error message stating " no communication to the printer . When I click on " ADD A PRINTER " I do it like you guys said to. Click Local printer and stuff. Then I get install driver window and I click on "install driver " but it stops responding everytime I click on that button. The port that its suppose to be on is in the PORT's tab. I have it setup to this " '\\computer' (file://\\computer) name \ printer shared named " port. I aslo put both of the IP ADDRESSes inside the Norton Internet Security. I could ping both of the computers fine. |

i was reading through some of your print sharing problems with network magic using vista and xp...i feel for you but the problem is simple. i have 6 computers all networked through network magic. two are vistas rest are xp's. my printer is connected directly to an xp laptop along with an external hard drive. since the xp with the printer connected to it is a local printer, it is shared. the rest my computers were add by going through the add printer selection but you add a network printer. this allows you to go through your workgroup name and get the driver from your local printer. the drivers are loaded from here and you are able to print from vista to xp using network magic. actually you dont need network magic but its easier. i also found it runs alot better if you use network magic to connect wireless. i've used the update to 5.5 and it all works fine. hope this helped... |
