| Netgear router connection problems Ok fellas, here's the skinny. I have the most basic of basic Netgear wireless routers (WGR614), yet I still can't set this dang thing up! I am trying to set up two computers that are literally side by side. I go through the set up, it acknowledges the internet connection, then it asks for the login/password for my connection. I don't have one via my provider ("Qwest) as I simply ran through their install disk and it's ready to roll, no sign in, etc. I've read quite a bit about this, so I thought maybe it wasn't directed at my providers sign in, and instaed used the general sign in 'admin' and 'password' that work on virtually all Netgear units. No go. I also tried the login of '1234', which is used for older routers (which this is not), but that didn't work either. I am obviously using wires, as there is no need to go wireless. What am I doing wrong? All my wiring is correct. Thanks. Chad -- huskersfan |

At least Linksys got me going in no time about a year or so ago. I have had no problems since, except when I started using Vista about two weeks ago but the connection problems I am having are not router related. I recontacted Linksys and my router is still correctly setup and working fine. Give Netgear a call and they will walk you through getting setup. -- Make a Great Day Frank Parmelee USA |

"the login/password for my connection" -- You really need to get your login name and password (they do exist, despite having used the Qwest installer) since, since without them, there is no way to actually make a connection to the Internet. You may have to contact Qwest's support people to find out what your login really is. As for the login to the router itself, you need to have either the IP address or the URL (name) of the router. The method for using the web access on the router will be spelled out in the manual. If the router hasn't been reprogrammed then the default name and password in the manual should work. Resetting the modem (method shown in the manual) will reset them to the defaults. This will get you talking to the router but will _not_ get you on the internet. Once you are talking to the router via its web interface you can enter your Qwest user name and password into the proper slots. -- John McGaw http://johnmcgaw.com |

| Re: Netgear router connection problems
Hi If I understand your post you probably set the connection to the ISP before you used a Router and you used some kind of CD setup. In all likelihood this setup installed some sort of ID and PW on you computer to authenticate the connection. Contact your ISP and find how the authentication can be set on the Router. Cable Internet might do it like this - http://www.ezlan.net/broadband.html DSL might do like this - http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html The above is just an example since I do not know how Qwest is handling the issue. | Re: Netgear router connection problems connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page. disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected -- Noddsta |

Pic here: http://www.pcwintech.com/files/scree...614_v5/000.png After that, all should be "automatic". Note: I am assuming that like 99 percent of the small home networks out there that your provider supplied DSL modem/router is doing the "loging on" part. -Frank |

Go here and select your router, then click on the "Basic" setup screenshot. http://www.pcwintech.com/node/111 -Frank |
