| Problems Networking XP and Vista Machines
I've searched the NG here for solutions to my problem, but haven't found a solution. Here's the situation: - XP desktop- current updates to the OS - Vista laptop (brand new) -set up wireless network: can see all of the shared folders on the XP machine from the Vista laptop, but can only see the Public folder on the Vista laptop from the XP machine. Several other folders, set up for sharing on the Vista laptop, can't be seen on the XP machine ("not accessible- you may not have permission to use this network resource"). - have tried both public and private settings on the Vista laptop- no difference - Both machines are on the same workgroup - Firewall is not part of the problem: Windows firewall is turned off on both machines, and problem persists when Kaspersky Internet Security's firewall is disabled - user name is the same on both machines Any thoughts? Thanks. |

Hi Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions). Even if you switch the Firewalls Off, make sure that the Trusted Zone and exceptions are configured correctly. http://www.ezlan.net/faq.html#trusted Make sure that what you are trying to share in Vista is indeed is sharable. Some folders for security reason would not share. Hi, I'm having the same problems (still) and found the place in Kaspersky where I can specify Zone status by IP address as either "Local network", "Trusted", or "Internet", so this is progress! Anyway, right now the address of the router shows in the list (that is, 192.168.0.0). Does changing that to Trusted Zone do the trick or do I have to add the IP address of each computer as assigned by DHCP? Are there any negative consequences to changing the 0.0 router address to Trusted Zone? Thanks, R |

Hi If there is No way to put in a range, like 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.20, or a sunbet with wild card like 192.168.0.* Then you have to list the IPs of all network devices. None of these seem to be the problem. I have NO problem accessing the "Public" files on the Vista laptop; only accessing the other drives/files, which are set to be shared. Any thoughts? Any thoughts? I know you said the user name is the same on all machines, but what about passwords? Create matching user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and the passwords assigned to each user account can be different; the accounts/passwords just need to exist and match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY SIMPLE ONES. If you wish a machine to boot directly to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions at this link work for both XP and Vista: Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple File Sharing (Folder Options>View tab).
