Sometimes local network fileshares not detected

Sometimes my Vista machine shows absolutely nothing when I click on
Networks. I can see the Vista machine from my XP machine, but I cannot see
either the Vista or the XP from the Vista. Only cure I have found is to
reboot the Netgear (firewall) router, then reboot the Vista machine. Have
never been able to catchech it at the cusp, so have no idea why it gets in a
snit like this.

I have noticed that when it's in this state I can't connect to my Web site
with WS_FTP, although I can always connect from the XP machine. the reboot
thing fixes that too.

It seems that Vista is full of mysteries!

Any ideas?

Can you ping each other when that happens? If not, post the result of
ipconfig /all may help.

Thanks, Robert. Next time it happens I'll do that. Today everything was
fine. Since I've been doing a lot of FrontPage 2003 stuff lately I can't
help but wonder if it is resetting something. I have a feeling it has to do
with all the security stuff. I'm using the AVG firewall instead of Windows
firewall.

At this time on my Vista machine (GoliathVista) there is nothing showing in
the Network dialog, i.e., after I click on Network in the Start menu. Not
even GoliathVista itself. When I look at the network from the XP machine
(GoliathXP) I can see GoliathXP but not GoliathVista. Yet I can ping the
GoliathXP from GoliathVista and vice versa using the numerical IP addresses
asigned by the firewall router.

Per your request here is the report from Win IP Config manager
(www.pkostov.com) running on GoliathVista. Hope this isn't more than you
wanted.

Can I assume you can ping each other by IP but not name? If this is true,
enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Bob,

I can successfully ping both ways with names as well as numeric IP
addresses.

I just rebooted the router and then the GoliathVista. That fixed the problem
for now, but still don't know what causes the problem. Could my Netgear
FM114P be getting tired?

I'm sorry, but I didn't read your note carefully enough. I should have
checked the NetBIOS before rebooting. Right now it is enabled. But, if it
was not enabled before would that have caused the symptoms? If so, what
would cause it to become disabled?

Ed - May I ask a question of you? When this disappearing act shows up,
have you just put your Vista machine into either sleep or hibernation?
I've found that almost EVERY time I do that, I lose network connectivity
until I reboot the Vista machine. It appears to do this either wireless
or wired - no change. I can almost guarantee that I will network
connectivity or, for whatever reason, just part of it. For instance, I
can not 'see' the XP computer hosting my laser printer in "Network", but
I can print to it!

At other times, from the XP end of things, I can 'see' the Vista
machine, but as soon as I close the lid and open it again I can't. I
get the feeling it is related to the power-down modes available to the
NIC(s) and their inability to power back up properly.

Interesting thought. I don't put it into sleep or hibernation, but perhaps
it switches into sleep when I'm away from the keeyboard for a while. I'll

That's it! I almost never put it to sleep or hibernation, but I just did
and sure enough, when I wake it up there is no network showing. It probably
goes to sleep when I'm away from it for a while. So that gives me a new line
of enquiry!

Spoke too soon. An hour or so after I found the Network was hidden after the
sleep I cheked it again and found it OK.

Buried way down in one of the settings for Power Options, there was a
checkbox that said something to the effect 'let this device be powered
down' or 'let this device enter low-power' during sleep. Something like
that (I can't find it right at the moment) and unchecking it kept me
from losing the network when I went into hibernation. I still have the
problem if the computer goes into sleep mode.

Sometimes, when I come out of sleep, the computer will give me a BSOD
and flag it as coming from 'DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE' (9F). That
tells me something just isn't right with Vista and either sleep or
hibernation on a laptop.
