Unable to print from Vista laptop to XP Networked printer

I have a wireless network in my home. I'm using a Linksys WRT160N router
for the network, which is hosted off a tower PC running XP. The XP PC
has an HP 7760 printer connected to it and it is shared.

Prior to my recent router upgrade I was using Network Magic for the
network interface and I was able to print to the HP 7760 from my Vista
laptop. But since I upgraded to the Linksys router I cannot print -- or
even connect to -- the HP7760.

I've tried everything, including some advice from a thread or two in
this forum but no luck. I'm about ready to pull my hair out.

Why can't I find the HP7760 on the network from my Vista laptop? Can I
connec the HP7760 directly to the router and share it that way?

Help! Can someone please help me figure this out before I go nuts?
Thanks

Many Vista printer issue can be fixed by adding it as local printer first
and remap it as network printer. This search result may help too.

Vista printer issues are solved by installing the printer as a Local Printer

Re: Unable to print from Vista laptop to XP Networked printer

You didn't say, but is your laptop a 64-bit version of Vista? Mine was
and I had the same problem you did until I went to the Canon site and
got 64-bit drivers for the networked printer. Even though the printer
was on a 32-bit XP machine (and shared) I still needed the 64-bit
drivers to connect. You start an install as if the printer was local,
but then tell the installer that the printer is networked and, when you
get to the panel that asks you to find the printer on the network, there
it is.

I think that HP probably may also have 64-bit drivers for your printer.

Did any of our suggestions work?

Re: Unable to print from Vista laptop to XP Networked printer

Thanks guys,
I tried creating a local port on the laptop with
"//networkpcname/printername" as the path, but I got an error msg
stating the path could not be found. (FWIW, the XP PC name = KBLTOWER
and the HP printer's shared name on the XP PC = HP7760, so I used
//KBLTOWER/HP7760.)

I also tried creating a port using the XP IP address but that didn't
work either. The printer is added but with an error. To top it off, I'm
now unable to delete that assigned printer.

The Vista version I'm using on my laptop is Home Premium SP1, which is
a 32-bit OS, so the 64-bit driver shouldn't be the issue.

This is really starting to tick me off... :)

Re: Unable to print from Vista laptop to XP Networked printer

You're right about the 64-bit drivers then. If you still have the
driver install disk for the printer, try using it on the Vista machine
as if the printer was installed locally. Then, when the wizard asks you
to "locate the printer" (if it does, that is), point it to the other
machine. Sometimes manually entering "//networkpcname/printername"
doesn't work properly.
