| Windows Mail, Microsoft Outlook 2000 & .pst file
Slightly different challenge - laptop stolen last week that was running Microsoft Outlook 2000 and XP - I had burned a DVD backup that included a ..pst file backing up emails from Outlook 2000. Now have a new computer that is running Vista with Windows Mail. Am running Vista with Microsoft Office Professional 2000 and hence Microsoft Outlook 2000. Am I able to retrieve on the one computer my .pst file to recover my email messages into Windows Mail or do I need to upgrade my version of either Outlook or Office Professional? |

OL needs to be installed on the Vista PC Copy your pst file(s) from DVD to eg the Documents folder - do not ovewrite any existing pst - Check properties of the pst file to ensure the read only flag is off. Start OL, File>Open>Personal Folders.......browse to the location of the pst & open it OL2k is not fully compatible with Vista, generally there will be a account password problem, but there may be others. You can then in Mail import msgs & addresses from OL "StolenLaptopers" <StolenLaptopers@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C2A39424-06AB-4121-8210-724C525E92E4@microsoft.com... > Slightly different challenge - laptop stolen last week that was running > Microsoft Outlook 2000 and XP - I had burned a DVD backup that included a > .pst file backing up emails from Outlook 2000. | Re: Windows Mail, Microsoft Outlook 2000 & .pst file
Thanks, tried that and almost worked but came up against a slight problem. Firstly for some reason have a trial version of OL2007 on my computer so think that avoids any issues with OL2000 - opened OL2007 then opened the .pst file and it recovered and downloaded all the emails in OL2007 - all looking good at the moment. Then opened up Windows Mail selected File -> Import -> Message and was asked to select program/format that you want to import email from (4 choices). Selected Microsoft Outlook and was then asked to choose a profile. There were two profile names available: Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings or {xxxx123 - alphanumeric code} Neither worked - when I selected Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings Windows Mail automatically shut down and then restarted. When I selected the {xxx} profile received message "Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client. An error has occurred" Any suggestions on overcoming this problem - can see all my messages in OL2007 just need to get them now into Windows Mail? I dont actually use Mail Using the Mail applet in the control panel , or via rt click on the OL desktop shortcut, check what name the OL Profile has been given The Mapi client referes to a Mapi type mail account, not a pop account "StolenLaptopers" <StolenLaptopers@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:64A44ABC-5B00-4C27-B232-1BD2A5D811A2@microsoft.com... > Thanks, tried that and almost worked but came up against a slight problem. > > Firstly for some reason have a trial version of OL2007 on my computer so > think that avoids any issues with OL2000 - opened OL2007 then opened the > .pst > file and it recovered and downloaded all the emails in OL2007 - all > looking > good at the moment. > > Then opened up Windows Mail selected File -> Import -> Message and was > asked > to select program/format that you want to import email from (4 choices). > Selected Microsoft Outlook and was then asked to choose a profile.
