can't import .pst file from outlook 2003 to vista mail

I purchased a brand new pc with Windows Vista 64bit pre-loaded. Now the reason am here is to know how can I import Outlook 2003 pst from Windows XP to Vista? I have saved those pst file desktop that is about 544 MBs in size. I tried importing the same from Vista import options but the file is not showing up in the compatible files.

Let me tell you that the thumbnail for that pst is a "blank page" and when I check its properties, it says Open with: Windows Shell Common. I don’t know what is that.

Can anyone here please tell me how can I import this Outlook PST to Vista mail? It contains very important emails and accounts. Thanks in advance.

Even I doubt if Vista Mail can accept pst files because those file formats are related to Outlook whereas Vista mail (Windows mail) is completely different. However you can give a try to the steps mentioned in this post:

Alternatively you can install Office and import that PST to outlook again.

As you have already mentioned above that when you check the properties of PSt, it says Open with: Windows Shell Common, that means there is no registered program installed for opening this file, that is actually outlook. And as far as I know PST files are the unique file for Outlook similar to xls or doc for Excel and Word. So unless you install Outlook, you cannot use those PSTs.
