Windows Mail Error Sending a Message - Non-specific Error Message

I had been able to receive and send e-mail messages just fine, but right now
I have one message that won't send. I get a "Windows Mail" window with this
message: "The message could not be sent. An error has occured."

It doesn't tell me what the error is or how to correct it. And when I try
to save and close the message, it just asks me if I want to save it (which I
do, again) and still won't close the window. It doesn't show up in my Outbox
or my Drafts box either.

I turned off McAfee's email scanning, and I've seen suggestions to uninstall
McAfee, but I'm hesitant to do this yet, as this is clearly a "Windows Mail"
error message, not McAfee.

I've seen others with this same problem, but can't seem to find the
solution. Anyone???? TIA for any help!

Try the following:

"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

It works for all folders, not just the Outbox.

My money is on McAfee causing this problem.
Uninstalling McAfee should cure it.

Re: Windows Mail Error Sending a Message - Non-specific Error Mess

Thanks, Steve! Although this didn't fix my particular problem because the
email wasn't even showing up in my Outbox or any other folder, I remembered
that my dh had this problem on his business computer, so I sent him the link
to the update.

What finally worked for me was to copy all the text and paste it into a new
email, although I had read that that didn't work for some people with the
same problem ~ go figure!

Thanks, Gary ~ I want to keep McAfee running for now, but I'll keep that in
mind if I keep having problems. You'd think McAfee and Norton would've
caught up to Vista by now?!

Re: Windows Mail Error Sending a Message - Non-specific Error Mess

I don't know why McAfee and Norton (and lately Trend Micro) can't
get it right. The other antivirus makers seem to have no problem,
as long as you keep their email scanning option disabled.

Re: Windows Mail Error Sending a Message - Non-specific Error Mess

They seem more interested in having more features to get people to pay
for their programs and in paying PC makers to include trial versions of
their programs than in making their features work all the time.

RE: Windows Mail Error Sending a Message - Non-specific Error Message

I have the same or similar issue. My message stuck in my outbox has the same
error message on it. The message also will not delete, move to another
folder, move to junk mail, change send to. It is totally blocking my outbox
and won't let ANY of my other messages go out.

I can receive messages though.

Re: Windows Mail Error Sending a Message - Non-specific Error Message

Download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.
Certain common antivirus programs, such as most of those from
Norton or McAfee, tend to cause stuck messages and other problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you have such
a program, remember where to find the hotfix, and hope it will install
again if you need it again. A recent version of the Trend antivirus
program also causes assorted problems in Windows.
