| Importing e-mail and contacts from Outlook 2000 into Windows Mail
I have tried to import my e-mails and contacts from Outlook 2000 into Windows mail via a .pst file. The error message that I get is "Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client MAPI is not installed on this computer or an error occurred while initializing it" The Windows mail is the version supplied with Vista 64 bit edition. I have tried installing Outlook 2000 on the Vista machine but this is not proving to be productive either. Thoughts or suggestions ? Thanks |

Windows Mail needs part of it to be able to understand .pst files. Version 2003 or later of Outlook will run under Vista. Version 2002 runs under Vista, but with a few problems. If you can get a free trial version of version 2003 or later, it will run more than long enough to do the transfer. You can also transfer from Outlook to Outlook Express on your old computer, then transfer from Outlook Express to Windows Mail. <http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/email/import-dbx-files-outlook-express-windows-mail-vista-86458.html> <http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail> Bring along the .wab file if you want the contacts. After you copy the files to a directory on your Vista computer, but before you import them into Windows Mail, make sure the copies are read-write instead of readonly. |

I managed the same process using XP operating system. Export Outlook 2000 e-mail to an Outlook 2000 pst file Created new profile in Outlook 2007, so that only one account is identified by Windows Live Mail Imported Outlook 2000 pst file into new Outlook 2007 profile Close Outlook 2007 Open Windows Live Mail (WLM) and go to file/import/messages/MS Outlook WLM will ask to select Outlook profile - select recently created one with imported Outlook 2000 file. click OK ... I had one issue with a folder in the PST file which had over 500 messages. The solution was to break the folder over three folders in outlook which permited to bring in all the messages to WLM |

you dont need to do any of that, import/export you merely copy the pst file and open it within outlook "amazino" <amazino.3l4j3g@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:amazino.3l4j3g@DoNotSpam.com... > > I managed the same process using XP operating system. > > Export Outlook 2000 e-mail to an Outlook 2000 pst file > > Created new profile in Outlook 2007, so that only one account is > identified by Windows Live Mail > > Imported Outlook 2000 pst file into new Outlook 2007 profile > > Close Outlook 2007 > > Open Windows Live Mail (WLM) and go to file/import/messages/MS Outlook > > WLM will ask to select Outlook profile - select recently created one > with imported Outlook 2000 file. > > click OK ... > > I had one issue with a folder in the PST file which had over 500 > messages. Importing from outlook to Windows live mail I found that WLM could not read a PST file directly and needed to access the PST file through Outlook. I also found that the WLM import solution does not allow you to chose which PST file it imports from a profile in Outlook. Since I have several accounts and PST files in Outlook, the solution I used was to creat a profile per PST file I needed to import. I would guess that an alternative solution is to alter the default PST file. Andrew |

DL's comment was about the process of moving Outlook 2000 data to Outlook 2007. There is no need to use Import/Export here and, in fact, doing so will cause problems because the .PST export/import features in Outlook are broken and have been for some time. You lose data in the process and the Outlook profile in use at the time is very often corrupted. Make a copy of the Outlook 2000 .PST file, paste it into a folder on the Vista machine where it won't overwrite any existing .PST files (another way to corrupt a profile), then open it in Outlook 2007 using 'File|Open|Outlook Data File".
