| autofill email address's
i have imported my contacts into windows mail ok. windows mail will not autofill email address's. on outlook express, yahoo, aol, when you start typing the email address you get a drop down menu with a selection of address's. i have ticked the automatically fill email address's in the options. all my contacts are in windows mail, i can see them if i open contacts. someone please help. more info:- it appears that if I have sent an email, by typing in the full address, it remembers that address and the autofill works ok for the contacts that i have "manually" sent an email. i have over 200 contacts..help |

The auto-complete just doesn't work correctly... and when it does, it only remembers the last 29 addresses you entered. Windows Mail has not been upgraded for the past year. You might want to try the newer Windows Live Mail, which works better, including auto-complete. -- http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview "normanjones" <normanjones@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:2114A21F-658A-4EDA-ACA4-4C9DB4FA9C2D@microsoft.com... > i have imported my contacts into windows mail ok. windows mail will not > autofill email address's. on outlook express, yahoo, aol, when you start > typing the email address you get a drop down menu with a selection of > address's. i have ticked the automatically fill email address's in the > options. all my contacts are in windows mail, i can see them if i open > contacts. someone please help. more info:- it appears that if I have sent > an > email, by typing in the full address, it remembers that address and the > autofill works ok for the contacts that i have "manually" sent an email. i > have over 200 contacts..help |

Why type an address that is in your Contacts Folder? In the new message window click on the To: it will open your contacts, type a search in there. -- Regards Steve. MS-MVP. [DTS] UK |

when viewing photographs you get the option on the top toolbar to email, select the photo, select email, you get an attach window, ok it, it then goes straight a send mail page where you cannot access your contacts, try it. its not a big deal but it would be nice and quick, rather than going through the the other 5 steps to attach photographs. Instead, it uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages to. This list is very hard to edit; it's easier to just send messages to 29 addresses you want on the list. If you want to use the contacts list, don't start typing the address. Instead, in the new message window, click on Tools, then Select Recipients. |

Microsoft won't change that aspect of Windows Mail. Their response would be that if Windows Mail does not meet your needs, then switch to Windows Live Mail: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (WLMail) "Elainecarolboyle" <Elainecarolboyle@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:94064708-F709-4A6D-819B-41F997F27F65@microsoft.com... > thanks norman, mac user here trying to adjust to a pc, the memory in windows > mail for storing addressess should be enough for a realistic number of > addresses, they should expand it. i k now i only have to learn a new habit of > clicking on the to but it'san extra move! the other way is better > > "mac" wrote: > >> >> "normanjones" <normanjones@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:2114A21F-658A-4EDA-ACA4-4C9DB4FA9C2D@microsoft.com... >> >i have imported my contacts into windows mail ok. windows mail will not >> > autofill email address's. on outlook express, yahoo, aol, when you start >> > typing the email address you get a drop down menu with a selection of >> > address's. i have ticked the automatically fill email address's in the >> > options. all my contacts are in windows mail, i can see them if i open >> > contacts. someone please help. more info:- it appears that if I have sent >> > an >> > email, by typing in the full address, it remembers that address and the >> > autofill works ok for the contacts that i have "manually" sent an email. i >> > have over 200 contacts..help >> >> You already discovered that WM remembers previously used addresses, that is >> all that it remembers, it only remembers a maximum of 29 addresses, the 30th >> drops out of the memory. >> >> Why type an address that is in your Contacts Folder? >> >> In the new message window click on the To: it will open your contacts, type >> a search in there. >> >> >> -- >> Regards Steve. >> MS-MVP. Autocomplete / Autofill email addresses. Folks, this is so simple..... When ever you have a major change or addition to your email address book and autocomplete for the new email addresses won't work, simply start a new email, blank is okay, select ALL of your email addresses to SEND TO, save it to drafts, delete it from drafts. So far, this has worked nicely for me since, mmmmm... somewhere around Office 2000 or so. |

If you import your addys into the 'Contacts' folder under your username, WM will use those to auto complete email addys. If you don't have SP1, it will not do this until after you hit the send button. SP1 fixed that for me so it now auto completes as soon as I finish typing. You can type just part of a name such as the last name. If there is only one possibility it will use it. If there is more than one possibility it will ask you to pick from a list. The list used for the autocomplete function (which is not the contacts list) won't remember any more. |

The list used for the autocomplete function (which is not > the > contacts > list) won't remember any more. I have hundreds of addresses in my contacts folder. It works for all of them. WM will search the 29 auto complete entries and then will move on to the contacts folder. If it's not working for you then you have a different problem. Try a fake entry in contacts that is not in you auto compl. list and see if it works. Also you can reset the 29 addresses or delete just one of them. That will, indeed, work for Outlook, all versions, 2000 and later. It will not work for Windows Mail. When done with Outlook, you create or add to the ..NK2 ("Nickname") file which will hold a large number of addresses. Windows Mail will only retain the last 29 addresses used.
