| Suddenly can't send or receive email-could before
I initially had difficulty setting up my email account. After much searching in discussion and trial and error, I was able to use my account. I have been using my email without issue for about six months. Just yesterday I received the following message: The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E I have not added any new antivirus software or done anything out of the ordinary with my computer recently. It just seemed to suddenly stop working. I use Vista OS. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!! |

Check if Verizon has changed their setup instructions, or you did not follow them: http://netservices.verizon.net/porta...help/selection Some common antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee, or a recent one from Trend, are slow to cause problems in Windows Mail, and have to be uninstalled, not just disabled, to stop them from starting new problems. For many other antivirus programs, just leaving email scanning disabled is enough. |

See if your computer can 'ping' the verizon mail server. Click start, all programs, accessories, and click command prompt. at the prompt, type 'ping incoming.verizon.net' without quotes. If you get a reply, that's good. This confirms that your computer can see the server. If you get 'timed out' or 'ping could not find host', then something is blocking the mail server from you. This is a start...It could be within the program itself too. Does verizon have a webmail alternative you could try to make sure that your email username / password is working still? It would have been helpful if you had disclosed which antivirus software you are using. Over time, some AV's corrupt WM. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (WLMail) "winjidi" <winjidi@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:58F2DC35-2AB8-4368-95A8-65A53D4917FE@microsoft.com... >I initially had difficulty setting up my email account. Hi, I'm not a techie. Yesterday I came upon the Windows e-mail help area wherein you discussed experiencing Error Number 0x800CCC0E. Norton Internet Security and Spysweeper were installed when I got my PC in November. I started periodically getting this Error Notice after about a month when I went to my inbox, sent items or delete mailboxes. I use Vista. Despite this message, I've never sent e-mail that did not reached the recipient, nor have I missed receiving an e-mail. Nonetheless, I have called the Verizon tech support line six or seven times and each time the rep and I checked and confirmed all the settings were correct and we sent successful test e-mails. One time, before sending the test messages, the rep deleted and re-entered the settings. Hers and all of the Verizon reps' efforts stopped that Error Number until it resumed after my next weekly Norton activity....so it IS related. I've also called Hewlett Packard and Microsoft, but they were no help. Here's something new that the last rep from Verizon told me. When I go into my Windows e-mail folder, click the Send/Receive box on the blue bar below the toolbar. This will start a check on the server for new messages and, I guess, screens/auhtoriizes/clears them before they appear in your inbox. It makes sense to me that this screening is related to security. After this short process, your e-mail appears in your in-box. Again, I've never lost a sent or received e-mail, depsite this message. I'm learning to live with it. I don't know, of course, if time will bring additional issues. I tried the suggestion by the guy with the "ping" suggestion and my system passed the test. Hope this info helps a bit. please keep me apprised if you hear anyhting else on this. "winjidi" wrote: > I initially had difficulty setting up my email account. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled. If you ever get tired of seeing the error messages, download and install a more compatible antivirus like: AVG free edition: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff or Avast free edition: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom install, and then deselect the email scanning option. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (WLMail) "marpaz" <marpaz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:764BFF07-07AF-48B2-B778-082036EB3896@microsoft.com... > Hi, > > I'm not a techie.
