can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

New computer Feb.07. Norton 360 installed Apr.07. All worked just fine with
Windows Mail until a few days ago, then suddenly I could not send email, but
could still receive it. I learned that Earthlink had made changes in their
outgoing mail server to help fight spam. I made the required changes (smtp
to smtpauth, and Port 25 to 587) in my email settings, but still could not
send emails. "Server requires Authentication" is checked. I disabled
Norton's email scanning. I deleted the emails in my Outbox and created a new
test message to myself, but it still would not send. I turned the computer
off and let it rest. Nothing has helped. The error message reads: Your
server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this
include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.
Subject 'test message', Account: [my correct email address] Mail Account',
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port 587, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Error Number 0x800CCC0F. Can anyone help? I am not very computer
literate.

RE: can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

Hello, I have the same error message come up when I try to send any large
attachments. This error message terminates my connection. It seems that Vista
doesn't work very well with dialup. I use Earthlink also. I can receive the
message I am trying to forward, but it will not go. Can someone help me? I
have had the same error since buying my computer in July of 07. Barbara

Re: can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

Windows Mail is not compatible with most Norton and
McAfee security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, NOT just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Regardless of the error, the connection should not terminate.
Go to Tools, Options, Connection, make sure that "Hang up
after sending and receiving" is not checked.

Why was Norton compatible with Windows Mail until just a few days ago? I
don't get it! What has changed? Do I need to cancel my Earthlink and find a
new Internet Service Provider?

Re: can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

Gary, the hang up after sending & receiving is not checked. I can send small
written e-mails or forward small e-mails, but when I try to send a large file
attachment forward the mail will try to go and then a windows mail window
will come up and say your internet provider has not responded in 60 sec.
would you like to wait. I say yes and in 60 sec. my internet connection is
not connected. I loose the connection. This happens every time I try to send
something big. It is a windows mail problem. Probably somewhere in the
options. I've checked everything, but some of the options are hard to
understand. There are too many.

You may have long solved this issue, however I'd been searching for a
solution and finally figured it out, so this could help others :)

When configuring the email account under Tools -> Accounts -> (select
email account) Properties -> Servers.

In the box that says "Email username", you must enter the entire email
address, not just the user name.

You still want to use the SMTP server: smtpauth.earthlink.net, port
587

Hope this helps! This also applied to Mozilla Thunderbird.

Re: can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

I just had the same problem and finally got it to work!

I ended up using the SMTP settings from my ISP rather than from my website.
Then for the password I had to use my default email address and password,
rather than my second email address (the one that was getting the error
message).

Re: can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

Yes, that is known as a hybrid account (non-matched POP and SMTP
servers). I've helped a lot of people with that setup. Glad to see you
got it working.
