Are you running McAfee or Norton antivirus? Those will need to be
uninstalled because they are incompatible with Windows Mail.

I've given up with Windows Mail on my existing account and reverted to
Outlook. Can anyone provide advice on how I can get my IE Favourites across
to a new user account where I can get WM working?

In addition, if I stick with Outlook, how can get it to send and receive on
opening?

Webmail is not a program. You go to the webmail site with your
web browser.

In IE: Click File (if you don't see File, press Alt), Import & Export.

Outlook questions should be referred to the Outlook newsgroup:
microsoft.public.outlook.general

try start the winmail direct from the folder it locate. i did and it works.

I have the same message, problem as bgjon, but after the first sentence, it
reads "initialize junk filtering." When I cancel out that dialogue box,
there's on more box, which reads "Windows Mail could not be started because
MDOE.DLL could not be initiated."

Also, I have McAfee Virus. Why the heck did they put it in my Gateway Laptop
that I bought six months ago with Vista if Windows Mail it isn't compatible
with McAfee!?!? They put in a program that they knew didn't work with the
mail program that comes with the system?!?!

Gateway and other computer sellers include a trial copy of
McAfee or Norton AV because the AV vendor pays (bribes)
them to do so. The incompatibility problem is not widely known
outside of this cadre of Windows Mail experts.

I just uninstalled McAfee, restarted, and tried to open Windows Mail
again, with the exact same result. What's my next step? Thanks.

Re: Windows Mail can not be started

Something in your Windows Mail is corrupted. Hopefully it is
just the mail account, so delete that mail account, restart Windows
Mail, then recreate that account. If no improvement, the
corruption is more widespread.

When all else fails, there are two drastic solutions:

You can try a repair install of Vista:
This will replace system files, but is not supposed to affect data.

Another option is to abandon Windows Mail and switch to Windows
Live Mail. It will automatically import your WM accounts, settings,
folders and emails.

Why did Microsoft abandon Microsoft Outlook Express. It was a perfectly
functional email program and it worked pretty good. I would prefer to work
with Outlook Express again. Anyway of getting that loaded in Vista? The
problems with program compatibility in Vista are just terrible. NOT
impressed.

No, Outlook Express won't install in Vista.

I haven't seen an explanation as to why OE was abandoned.
Perhaps its program code just wasn't secure enough for Vista.

I am still having this problem, too, and it is extremely aggravating. I have
memory and my disk isn't full. Why can't a solution be found, Microsoft?

Last night I patched my system with the following patches (system
configuration has not changed in any way other than that):

KB905866
KB941644
KB890830
KB943302
KB943899
KB943411

I am running Avast Antivirus Home Edition and have from day one since June
with no trouble with Windows Mail. I connect to POP clients and send mail
with SMTP. I cannot view the update history easily in Avast Antivirus to see
if it was updated.

I get the SAME message as you do. I do not have McFee or Norton and I still
can't get an e-mail out

Do you have a recent version of the Trend antivirus program, which also
causes assorted problems in Windows Mail?

Do you have the Google Toolbar program installed, which also causes
such problems?

Do you have a program with SMS in its name installed? If so, tell us its
full name, since some of them cause problems in Windows Mail.

What if any antivirus programs, antispyware programs, firewall programs,
and other security programs do you have installed?

Click on your error message and copy the entire message to your next
message, in case there's some detail we need in order to offer much
help.

If you used the standard installation of avast!, it sometimes helps to
uninstall it and then do a custom install where you tell it to leave out
the part that scans email.

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

There are plenty of "professional" antivirus programs that work fine
with Windows Mail: NOD32 and Kaspersky for starters.

Also, it is not fair to classify the free antivirus programs (by inference)
as non-professional.

What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them tend to cause
assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

Windows Mail is not good at reporting errors caused by interference from
antivirus programs. They are often reported as not having enough memory.
What if any antivirus programs do you have, and have you ever had a
Norton or McAfee antivirus program on that computer?

The posts you quoted DID have the solution: Uninstall Norton.
Then follow up with their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039

If you are not willing to accept the advice of the experts here, then you will
have to come up with your own solution.

The uninstall program for McAfee often fails to remove the parts of the
program which cause problems in Windows Mail. Download and run
this cleanup program:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If this cures your problem, but leaves you with no antivirus program
installed, you may want one that doesn't cause problems in Windows
Mail. Most versions of the Norton antivirus program and a recent
version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they also
cause problems in Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG,
either one with a custom install where you tell it to leave out the parts
that scan email.

Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
The only way you can prove or disprove that your antivirus is the culprit is to uninstall it.

If you decide to replace your antivirus, we can recommend some free ones
that are more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here

I have just had the same problem with windows mail and am running Threatfire
- is this incompatible too? What do I need to do to get Windows Mail back up
and running?

after installing a couple of vista updates. she got the original poster's message, about windows mail being unable to open because it was being used by another application. she, however, is using windows live onecare for virus protection, and neither of us can seem to find any other program that is accessing windows mail.

i also just attempted to upgrade to windows live mail, and it seems that the installation failed. i believe i have seen this crop up before in another message board regarding this situation, but cannot seem to find it. again, she is using windows live onecare, and all that happened was she updated vista the night before last, and now the email program will not work.

uninstalled live onecare, reinstalled it, same problem.

The following messages pop up: "Windows mail could not be started need to
initialize junk filtering. You computer may be out of memory or your disk is
full. (0x80070002).
MSOE.DLL
I have McAfee Security and use gmail.

I just started getting this problem after installing 14 Windows Vista
updates. Was ther something wrong with one or more of the updates?

I just installed 8 of those Vista updates (the rest were optional),
and no problems. Make sure you reboot afterwards.

I am not familiar with the Threatfire antivirus, so I don't know how
compatible it is. As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must
be turned off, although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
If no improvement, consider doing a test uninstall of your antivirus, to see
if that cures the problem.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve the problem,
then as an alternative to uninstalling the antivirus consider upgrading to
Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects from
overly aggressive antivirus programs: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here

The uninstall of ThreatFire didn't do the trick so have upgraded to Windows
Live Mail and all seems hunky dorey.

Did you test Windows Mail while OneCare was uninstalled ?
If yes, and there was no improvement, you might as well abandon
Windows Mail and get your Windows Live Mail install completed.
Try installing the latest beta: http://download.live.com/wlmail

I'm getting a similar message, but with error code 0x800c0155 - says it may
be in use by an antivirus program... I have McAfee but have disabled the
email scanning, to no avail.

My question is, will installing Live Mail help me, will it install properly
and work even if Mail has been corrupted/flawed somehow?

Yes, the Windows Live Mail installer is able to import from a corrupted
Windows Mail.

To get the released version (November 2007) of WLM:
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
or the latest beta, which is even better:
http://download.live.com/wlmail

I am getting the same message. How did you fix? I am not very computer
literate so I need a step by step guide. Thanks so much if you can help me.

Don't know if anybody else is still having this problem but I thought
I'd share my solution to it.

First I went to the directory where WLM has all it's backups etc... and
copied all the files to a new folder I made on my desktop.

<Computer/Boot/Users/(mainuser)/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Live
Mail.>

Secondly, I deleted the original contents of the WLM folder after
making the copy of course.

Third. I went to open WLM. It should now open without a problem.

Fourth. I went to File in WLM and went to import messages. On the
window that popped up I then clicked on Windows Live Mail.

Fifth. I clicked the browse button and selected the new folder I made
at the beginning and clicked ok. This found all of my old e-mails and
imported them into WLM.

After this is done there should be an imported folder that you can
click under the Storage Folders part down the right hand side of WLM. In
the Imported Folder there will be your e-mails. Mine were under
pop.dsl.pip467 but obviously each persons will vary. I then opened that
folder. Selected all my e-mails and dragged them to the proper inbox.

After that I had all my e-mails back where they should be and WLM has
worked fine since.

So here's my scenario, Windows mail worked absolutely fine with McAfee
running, mail scanning, etc. I do not want to update to a soley internet
based email account ( I have one and like to download my mail). I had an
issue with my computer losing power and it corrupted the mail. How am I
supposed to go in and delete an email account when I don't have the first
clue as to where to find it?
