| Socket Error 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
Upon launch of Windows Mail, I receive two errors - first one is: The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test', Account: 'incoming.yahoo.verizon.net', Server: 'outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E and second one is: The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'incoming.yahoo.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.yahoo.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E I believe the first is Mail trying to send a test message, but am stymied. I just set up a Vista machine from the same manufacturer (HP) for my mother with the no problem getting Windows Mail launched. I have Norton (came pre-loaded) running on both, so I don't see why that would be a problem - I've noted the recommendations to ditch that, but it is running fine on hers. I have Outlook 2003 running on this Vista machine and it connects fine, but I have to enter incoming and outgoing passwords each time I shut down/reboot and I'd just as soon go over to Windows Mail. Any ideas out there? -- JRob |

Peter, just tried that and rebooted, but still get the error message The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'incoming.yahoo.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.yahoo.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E (I deleted the test message so I no longer get first error message I noted in original post). Just confirmed with my mother that her Norton is running with incoming/outgoing email scanning still in place, which is even more confusing to me. Went through each of her account settings in Windows Mail as well to ensure I mirrored her settings in WM and Norton. Do you think the fact I originally installed my Outlook 2003 is somehow the culprit here? Not sure why it would - it pulled all my mail over from Outlook on original setup of WM, just not connecting, yet if I launch Outlook it will connect and IE connects fine. |

Whether Norton will interfere with Windows Mail is a hit-or-miss proposition, something like playing Russian roulette. In good conscience I can't offer further help until you uninstall Norton, and you may have to recreate that account afterwards. Outlook 2003 is not a factor. |

I think you need to check with Yahoo on how to set up Yahoo mail in Windows Mail or Outlook Express. I'm pretty sure your ports are incorrect and your authentication settings may also be wrong. |

Thanks Frank - I will try that as well - I have connected with the same settings on the ports with Yahoo on Outlook 2003, just cannot seem to make it work with Windows Mail. In fact, it's connected with Outlook 2003 right now. In addition I went through each screen on my mother's Vista machine in her Windows Mail which I set up just fine (checked each of the WM Email account setting screens.) Each port setting and authhentication was set identically on this machine as on hers. Really appreciate the assistance and ideas! |

Try checking system files if they are corrupted they can cause problems in Mail. Go here to get full instructions. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/en-us |

Let us know what happens after Norton is uninstalled. You can always reinstall it if turns out *not* to be the cause of your problem. Another approach would be to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, since WLM seems to be more stable and more resistant to corruption issues. Incidentally, your server settings look fine to me. |

My notes indicate that Yahoo wants 995 for the POP3 (incoming) port and 465 for SMTP and "My outgoing server requires authentication" checked on the Servers tab. |

This is definitely a problem on the server side. I know it's an Outlook Express error. But similar errors are experienced in all mail programs. See the following same problem and more solutions here, "Socket error: 10061, Error number 0x800CCC0E" in OE |
