| Windows Mail - can't send or receive & can't see mail folder conte Just upgraded to Vista from MCE using a Dell-delivered upgrade package. All seemed to work OK until I tried to access my mail - major problems: 1. All my old mail folder and sub-folder names appear down the left, and when I select Local Files, they are all shown as having zero unread, but what looks like the right number - sometimes several hundreds - of 'Totla' messages, but nothing appears when i try to click on them to open them. Even the Inbox, which shows a number unread in brackets) reveals nothing at all Just the French equivalent of "there is nothing to display". Now the odd thing is that, having tried going in and out several times, once - and only once - the inbox comntents sudenly appeared and I was able to opena nd read the mail. Then when I tried to drag and drop into mail folders or into the "Deleted Items" folder, I received the message (equivalent in French) "Windows mail. Action could not be completed - an error was produced" No error code! I have never been able to reproduce the situation and since, I just have a list of "empty" folders. 2. I can neither send nor receive mail. When I try to send, I receive the message (equivalent in French) "Windows Mail. The message was not sent - an error was produced" Again no error code! I have checked out POP3 account details etc and they have been transferred correctly from Outlook Express - I am at a loss to know where to go next. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. In the short term I ma having to access my mail via the ISP server like hotmail but hardly satisfactory for the longterm, so I must fix this quickly. Thanks in advance for ideas. Best regards Ron in France |

As mikey indicates go to View | Current View | show all messages. If that doesn't help, then your database is corrupt. You can try compacting and repairing it to fix it with my WMUtil program (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) . It may or may not help. If that doesn't help then the only solution is to wipe out the database. First see here and make sure you don't have antivirus software set to scan email (www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2). Then go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder to find the message store location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to another directory, so that the Windows Mail directory is completely empty. Then restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing in the database. You can then add your accounts and if they work correctly then you can import messages from the directory to which you moved the files back into WinMail (see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm2wm). steve "Ron in France" <RoninFrance@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:DFDCF3F6-24CC-4D91-910E-29A716389DCE@microsoft.com... > Hi - new boy here. > Just upgraded to Vista from MCE using a Dell-delivered upgrade package. > All > seemed to work OK until I tried to access my mail - major problems: > 1. Thanks for your replies Mike and Steve. Checked VIEW - Current View and it has "show all messages" - but it doesn't! However, I have just found and solved the problem - in fact all the problems I had with Windows Mail(s). ... appear to have been caused by MacAfee Security Center and Virus Scan. I heard from someone else that MacAfee had caused them mail problems with Vista so thought I would try temporarily uninstalling all the macAfee products. On restarting the system and selecting Windows Mail, I saw the Windows Mail Logo Opening screen for the first time, then WM opened up as it should showed me all my folder contents and allowed me to send and receive! Wonderful!! I downloaded AVG and installed it to ensure I have AV protection, and I think I may just leave things like that and forget about MacAfee! Incidentally, when i ran Vista Upgrade advisor a month ago, it told me i wold have problems with MacAfee, so I contacted MacAfee and downloaded and installed the "necessary fixes for Vista". Dell's "Windows Vista Upgrade Assistant" checked out the "fixed" version and did not signal it as a potential problem, but clearly it is not yet trouble-free. Thanks again for your help Best regards Ron in France "Steve Cochran" wrote: > As mikey indicates go to View | Current View | show all messages. > > If that doesn't help, then your database is corrupt. Make sure when you install AVG that you disable the email scanning option. | I can receive but can't send
Got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and couldn't set up my Yahoo Mail to work from inside of Internet Explorer 7, like I used to have with my old laptop and Win 2K. What's with that? Is there a way around this issue? Vista seems to force me to use Windows Mail from inside IE, ......so reluctantly I set it up. It worked OK when home in San Francisco but I'm in Houston visiting relatives and using their AT&T Yahoo DSL/Wireless.......and I get this error message when trying to send. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Wanted: 1980's VW Vanagon 2nd and 3rd row seats - $100 (santa rosa)', Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F I'd prefer to have my mail like it was with the old computer and Win 2K, i.e email links clicked inside IE going directly into Yahoh Mail on the Web....can that be done? If not I ...at least...need to be able to send from Windoz mail. Warren C. |

How far did you get? Did you do the pre-requisite action of downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger? The path to Internet Options is left as an exercise for the reader. :-) You can merely type Internet Options in Vista's Start Search bar, and it will present that link for you. Or you can get there through Internet Explorer's Tools menu. -- Gary VanderMolen [MS MVP-WLM] "Warren C" <Warren.C.2y0fjd@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:Warren.C.2y0fjd@DoNotSpam.com... > > Gary VanderMolen;3209964 Wrote: >> You can make Yahoo webmail your default email service by >> following these directions: >> http://help.yahoo.com/help/uk/mail/ext/ext-11.html >> >> -- >> Gary VanderMolen [MS MVP-WLM] > > Sorry Gary, I tried. > > It may work that way in Win XP...but not in Vista. Try it, you'll see! It's part of SP1 but it's not an automatic update like for Windows Vista program. -- Ludger Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
