| Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail?
Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail? I've got a load of .dbx files which Vista's Windows Mail just seems to not recognise when I try to import. When I try to load new Identities it says all have been found (I left the Outlook Express 6 files in the correct folder, under local settings\Application Data\Identities\xxxxx\Microsoft\Outlook Express). xxxx being the hash Do you know how to fix. My previous PC had no password set for the Administrator so I shouldn't need a username & password (which I am not being prompted for anyway). Can you help? |

actually after you select the directory look at what the path is.. it will be wrong.. it will read \local settings\Application Data\Identities\xxxxx\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Outlook Express note the last folder is duplicated.. quite the bug aye.. I found if I than went back and selected the folder than backed out of the folder and clicked ok I than had the proper path and what do you know.. the import worked. | Re: Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail
I've been tearing my hair out (what's left) spending hours trying to import this Outlook Express 6 mail from my old Win 98 machine. I've been following everyone's advice to no avail. I tried copying the folders to Documents folder, and then creating a temporary directory: C:\tmp3\IDENTITIES\_DD478780_13F7_11D5_B56F_E0F55\MICROSOFT\OUTLOOK_EXPRESS Nothing works. Microsoft Mail fails with that same dreaded message. One thing I did notice is while the .dbx files are not read only, all the folders are marked that way. And no matter how many times I uncheck and apply (... and to all subfolders too), it keeps rechecking them as read only. It almost appears like something has these "locked" Any ideas? |

Mark - this is the only message in this thread that I have, so can you fill me in on exactly what steps you've taken? I'm assuming you're importing trying to import your OE6 mail to WM on a new Vista machine, correct? thanks! --tanja "Mark B." <Mark B.@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:D65BD397-B6DD-4361-8E88-349F25F0714F@microsoft.com... > I've been tearing my hair out (what's left) spending hours trying to > import > this Outlook Express 6 mail from my old Win 98 machine. | Re: Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail
Tanja, the message that I get is: "No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try> closing applications that may have files open." I copied all the .dbx files from my Win98 (Outlook Express 6.0) to a CD, and copied that CD to my Vista machine. I tried copying the directory to Documents and also to a temporary directory. Here I copied the entire Identities folder over: C:\tmp3\IDENTITIES\_DD478780_13F7_11D5_B56F_E0F55\MICROSOFT\OUTLOOK_EXPRESS Then in Windows Mail, I go to File/Import/Messages/Microsoft Outlook Express 6/Import Mail from OE6 Store Directory/... then Browse down (and I ensure there is no "duplication" in the path from that Vista bug). No matter what I do I get the same message. I even tried importing it without success into Microsoft Office Outlook (trial) without success). It's like something could be locking up the files. I did notice that the files are NOT read only, but the directory folders ARE read only - and no matter how many times I go into a folder and uncheck read only (and Apply), it immediately reverts to read only. | Re: Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail
I am guessing the problem is that since you copied to CD all the files are marked as read only. I think that if you copied them from cd to hd and then changed all the file attributes that you will be able to import them successfully. They cannot be marked read only if you want to import them into WM. Hope this helps BillP "Mark B." <MarkB@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C6E6D090-2CDA-4C5C-AA5B-D96E30E67B04@microsoft.com... > Tanja, the message that I get is: > > "No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running > that has the required files open. | Re: Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail
Bill, I went in and reset these to remove the read-only attribute. Still, no luck. Then I noticed that all of the folders where Read Only, and whenever I removed it, when I went in it was reset. Finally, I decided to copy all the .dbx files directly to the Desktop (so I could see them individually on the desktop), and I was then able to import my Inbox, but not Sent or other folders. They got errors. Then I created a new folder on the old box, copied the sent mail to it, copied it over to my Vista desktop, and was able to import it. Little by little I'll move the other folders. Open your Documents folder and create a new folder there. Copy all of the DBX files, including Folders.dbx, and make sure they are not Read Only. Go to Tools | Options | Read and uncheck the option to download xxx headers at a time and then reset the newsgroup and you should then see all the messages. I assume the problem is the same in WLMd as it is in OE and WM. steve "Tanja [MSFT]" <tfour@microsoft.com> wrote in message news:OVf2N0IUHHA.192@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Mark - this is the only message in this thread that I have, so can you > fill me in on exactly what steps you've taken? > > I'm assuming you're importing trying to import your OE6 mail to WM on a > new Vista machine, correct? > > thanks! > --tanja > > "Mark B." <Mark B.@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:D65BD397-B6DD-4361-8E88-349F25F0714F@microsoft.com... >> I've been tearing my hair out (what's left) spending hours trying to >> import >> this Outlook Express 6 mail from my old Win 98 machine. I can't thank you enough for the Info. Vista seems to add that extra folder a lot, what a pain. I had seen that issue and tried it but it didn't work so hadn't gone back to it. It totally works. | Re: Issue with Importing Outlook Express 6 to Vista's Windows Mail? Importing your Outlook express emails is a lot easier than everyone is making it out to. You don't have to worry about changing attributes this or that. Here's how to do it, plain and simple. 1. Create a folder under your Documents called 'Documents'. That's right, the same name. So it would look something like this: C:\Users\{name}\Documents\Documents 2. Copy all of your .DBX files from your old Outlook Express Indentity folder into the newly created "documents" folder. 3. Run the Import function from Windows Mail: File | Import | Messages. Select Outlook Express 6, choose OE6 Store directory, and then browse to the Documents folder, the FIRST Documents folder: C:\Users\{name}\Documents\ 4. Follow remaining prompts to import all or some of your folders. For some reason, the import function will append an additional \documents\ onto end of the browse path line. By copying your files into the 2nd documents folder, the import function can find the .dbx files. I know this procedure works, for I have performed it several times, including about 2 hours ago. Good luck, but it really is quite simple. -- rodemsky |
