| The command failed to execute
I either get "the command failed to execute" or the attachment seems like it will open in the web and then nothing happens when trying to open attachments in Windows Vista. I recently installed IE8, but had the same problem when I had iE7, except I wouldn't get "the command failed to execute" error. It would just act as if it would open, but not do anything. I use Norton Anti-virus...is that the problem? Please help! |

Please look in your c:\Program Files\Windows Defender folder and tell me the creation date of the MpOAV.dll File your problem sounds alot like the one I had. It's 1/20/2008 |

| RE: The command failed to execute
I have an email in my inbox which has been there for some time. It used to work. Today I installed a big MS update including IE8 and now I get the "command failed to execute" message when trying to open the file attached to this email. I have McAfee antivirus, but it has never caused a problem in the past. |

The best workaround at this time is to uninstall IE8: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 A pain? It's easy enough IMHO. I for one prefer, however, to work around the problem with only JPG and TXT files not opening directly and need saving first. |

I did the IE8 uninstall, and it was easy. There is no estimated due date for a proper fix. Try looking at the following site for info on how to correct this problem. I had the same problem and now it works after exiting and restarting windows http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...701033.mspx#E6 |

GARY - I have not installed IE8 & on June 2nd I followed your earlier advice to disable the Norton E- Mail scanning - I then could open the E-Mail attachments. To-day they do not open? |

Verify that your IE is still version 7 (see its Help, About), because Windows Update has been pushing IE8 on users who may not be fully aware of what they are agreeing to. What does the error message say when you try to open attachments? Is the problem limited to specific attachment types (DOC, PPS, etc.)? GARY - the usual " the command failed to execute ". The IE8 has not been installed. How do I determine which attachments do not open? |

GARY - I checked again & we had IE8 - it must have been installed with the automatic updates . I have now deleted it. We seem OK now! What do you recommend re updates - should they be blocked until we review them? |

No need to block updates. Microsoft has assured me that before Windows Update installs IE8, it will ask the user for special permission. Just say no. :-) |

| Re: The command failed to execute
I have just recently had a problem with Windows Mail with this command error. I have been reading that the best fix is to uninstall Internet Explorer 8. Can you run through the steps again for me for uninstalling IE8 and then reinstalling IE7? I don't want to mess it up. I phoned Dell yesterday to see if they could assist as just bought the computer in January 09 and they wanted me to purchase a software warrantly package of $250 before they would give me any advice = they refused to acknowledge that it was not my computer's problem but an IE8 problem so I told them what to do with their offer! Thanks Sharon Nanaimo,BC Canada "mel" wrote: > GARY - I checked again & we had IE8 - it must have been installed with the > automatic updates . The definition of "best" depends on what is important to you. Uninstalling IE 8 is the best way to solve the problem but it might not be the best solution for you since there is much in IE 8 that is very useful.
