| restoring backed-up e-mail
Norton backed up my e-mails in a folder winmail.fol. I can not find a way to transfer this back to Winmail, nor can I find any application that will open the winmail.fol file. Has anyone else encountered this problem? |

That would be a question for the good folks at Symantec; Norton created this file, it should be capable of opening it. Thanks Hal. Maybe I should have spent 6 hours trying to wring it out of them instead of the 5 hours I actually spent - trying to get the good folks at Symantec to understand the problem. Apart from that your contribution, though appreciated, was frankly ....... well, useless "Hal Hostetler [MVP-P/I]" wrote: > That would be a question for the good folks at Symantec; Norton created this > file, it should be capable of opening it. > > Hal > -- > Hal Hostetler, CPBE -- hhh@kvoa.com > Senior Engineer/MIS -- MS MVP-Print/Imaging -- WA7BGX > http://www.kvoa.com -- "When News breaks, we fix it!" > KVOA Television, Tucson, AZ. So, unfortunately, are most Symantec products which I refuse to use for that very reason It is, however, not really a mail problem and a Symantec forum would be a much better place to raise the issue, hence the not-so-useful suggestion. If you have a problem with a third party tool, then their site is the place to seek support and not an MS specific group, which supports the use of MS products After all if you have a Ford, then GM is not the place to ask if you have problems with it "tonybre" <tonybre@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:15FE80AF-70D9-4878-96C5-B8AD643F3634@microsoft.com... > Thanks Hal. Thank you "DL". Now why didn't I think of that? I take it that if you were lost in your Ford, you wouldn't think of asking a GM driver the way? I can assure you that I really have been down all obvious lines of inquiry, particularly including Norton - so far without success. I thought that asking the wider MS community, who must have hundreds of thousands among them who have used Norton's back-up facility, might just reveal the answer. We just work on Windows Mail issues here, and have no expertise in Norton. Try asking in the Norton Users Forum: http://community.norton.com/norton/ -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "tonybre" <tonybre@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:638D4933-A28C-41C8-AC6C-850BF465EC0E@microsoft.com... > Thank you "DL". Is there any new resolve with this issue? I have the identical problem, with winmail.fol files backed up on Dell Datasafe, that cannot be restored. Even Dell cannot figure this out. The import function on Windows Mail (Vista) does not recognize the files. Thanks |

As far as I know, winmail.fol files are not backups of Windows Mail. If you know which program created those backup files, contact their support techs or user forums. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "gregsir" <gregsir.3lae7e@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:gregsir.3lae7e@DoNotSpam.com... > > Is there any new resolve with this issue? | Re: restoring backed-up e-mail
I did find out that winmail.fol is not the file that contains Windows Mail messages. Messages are individually stored as .eml files. They can be simply copied from your Windows Mail\Local directory to a storage device like a thumb drive, then copied back to your new Windows Mail\Local directory. This worked for me. The "Local" folder is usually found in: users\username\appdata\microsoft\windows (or microsoft) mail |

Using a file manager (Windows Explorer) to add or delete messages is not advisable because it will corrupt the database. Use the Import/Export tools under the File menu. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "gregsir" <gregsir.3le0rb@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:gregsir.3le0rb@DoNotSpam.com... > > I did find out that winmail.fol is not the file that contains Windows > Mail messages.
