| Windows Vista Mail asking for logon information now morning. A windows security pop up window with username and password confirmation and checkbox for remembering both pops up now. If you check remember my credentils it still won't remember and will ask you again. It has nothing to do with your ISP. Any suggestions? |

I am having the same problem, mine started yesterday evening when I got home after a week of vacation... Keeps requesting me to sign in and when I do I receive this error message.. Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop.broadband.rogers.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate argument(s) missing.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91 and then a different message... Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop.broadband.rogers.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Error logging in. Please visit http://mail.yahoo.com', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92 Seems like a lot of users are having similar problems so I am confused as to why Windows has not come up with an answer...I have just completed my updates... |

Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers. Make sure the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication." is unchecked. If it was already unchecked, which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not fully compatible with Windows Mail. |

| Re: Windows Vista Mail asking for logon information now
If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption. One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account. If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken. Which antivirus are you running? As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off, although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects. In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled. If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem, consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs. http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons explained here |

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption. One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account. Norton Antivirus 2008 (and earlier) is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail. Symptoms often don't surface until several months have gone by, or until an update occurs. First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here: Several users here have reported that Symantec will give you a free upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2009, which cures the problem. In a worst case scenario, you may have to uninstall Norton, followed by using their debris removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039 Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview |

| Re: Windows Vista Mail asking for logon information now
I have been having similar problems but it is centered on my Yahoo account. I have set up three accounts in Windows Mail all to check the same email account at Yahoo. One uses the plus servers and the other two do not. The problem is usually on the first of the three accounts encountered when I click Send/Receive mail. I then click cancel and the other two work fine. Sometimes the first works fine and the 2nd or 3rd one messes up. As an odd coincidence, Since I just set up this newsgroup account and subscribed to this group, I can select Synchronize All and all work fine, but if I try the Send/Receive button I still get the error. I will try your suggestion and delete all three accounts, restart Windows Mail and then recreate the accounts. I'll report back the results. I do not use Norton so that is not the problem. |

Was Norton or MacAfee antivirus ever installed on that computer? Most new computers come with a trial version of one of those two. I don't quite understand why you need three different accounts in Windows Mail to check one email account at Yahoo. msnews.microsoft.com and news.microsoft.com are aliases for the same server. Unless all three of your Yahoo accounts have the Mail Plus service, downloading via POP will not be reliable. Downloading with the Plus service is no more reliable than without it. I have the Plus service for the other benefits. Yes, but what I'm getting at is that free (non Plus) Yahoo accounts are not supposed to have POP access. Does your Mail Plus service entitle you to apply it to more than one Yahoo email address? No. A second address and all aliases get delivered to the same "inbox". My plus account can be accessed either via the plus.pop server or the plain pop server. I have one account in OE setup to poll via the plus server and two others set to poll the plain pop server. Between the three I almost always get my mail. I understand your setup now, but I've run out of ideas as to what else can be done to make your Yahoo mail more reliable. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast. :-) |

| Re: Windows Vista Mail asking for logon information now
Yes it was, but I used the Norton Removal tool to remove it. It appears that tool has been updated as I did not see any non-plug and play drivers that it used to leave behind unless they changed the names to just to be ornery. Yahoo email service suffers numerous problems at various times. Server timeouts userid/password not recognized and other assorted errors. With three accounts at least one works every time. BTW I noticed that Microsoft now has two news servers, msnews.Microsoft.com and news.Microsoft.com. It appears they are duplicates of each other. Are any useful newsgroups (for an experienced amateur) unique to either one? |

I recently helped a friend with the same problem so I hope the following information will help you….. Open up your windows mail, click on tools and then accounts, highlight the mail server you use (I.g pop.ntlworld.com) then click on properties and it opens another window, click on servers and make sure all the details you have for setting the account up are correct, then make sure the remember password is ticked, “log on using secure password authentication” should be empty (not ticked), then make sure “outgoing mail server” is ticked, then go into box marked settings (on the same page) the box that says USE SAME SETTINGS AS MY INCOMING MAIL SERVER should be ticked if not tick it, then click OK then APPLY then OK again, close internet accounts window and you should be able to use the windows mail without the hassle. Good Luck and let me know if this works. Nevermind, I found a solution that works for the moment anyways, hopefully for good. If you open windows explorer & go to C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect there is a folder there that has a bunch of numbers like S-1-5-393481413- & so on, yours may have differant numbers but what you do is you delete that folder then restart your computer, then restart windows mail & put in your username & password, making sure you save it. A new folder should get created to replace the one you deleted. Then it should work without putting in your password everytime. Worked for me anyways. |

At last - someone with an answer that works in a situation where, like me with Tiscali, you can have a primary E-mail/internet access account and multiple alternative (alias ?) names (eg for family members). You just have to set the Incoming Mail Server username & password on the alternate E-mail accounts to be the same as on your primary account. |

| RE: Windows Vista Mail asking for logon information now
Same thing started today for me. I never had to logon before. Now all of a sudden everytime I open up windows mail a box comes up saying Windows Security: logon to mail.lakefield.net Please verify that both the username and password are correct for your mail server. I put in my username & password & make sure "Remember my credentials" is marked. Plus in my account I have my password saved for both incoming & outgoing mail. But for some reason it is not saving it all of a sudden. It is getting frustrating to have to keep logging on everytime. I have tried all I can think of. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? |

| Re: Windows Vista Mail asking for logon information now
Dear Mr. VanderMolen: I have done all of the various suggestions including recreating an email account, checking and unchecking boxes for authentication. Also, I deleted any traces of McAfee and Norton and installed the security program you recommended (avast). Any other ideas? Thanks. |

Please, call me Gary. We're pretty informal here. :-) Joyce, I looked around but did not see a detailed problem statement from you. This thread was started by someone else ("CoCojax"), so I can't be sure you are experiencing the exact same symptoms unless you tell me so. Assuming the problem is that Windows Mail repeatedly asks for you to enter the username and password, it sounds like you've done pretty much everything I would have suggested. To reiterate: 1. Use the special removal utilities for McAfee and Norton antivirus. 2. Install Avast (or AVG) antivirus using the custom method which doesn't install the mail checking module. 3. Deleted that mail account, restart Windows Mail, recreate the account. If no improvement, about the only thing left to do is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail: http://download.live.com/wlmail |

It is usually quite evident from the symptoms whether the problem is local (your computer), or at your mail provider's server. |
