Will Windows Mail Import Outlook Express Messages?

Sister-in-law's computer died, and new Dell (on the way) has Vista

I do her backup and have copies of a recent WAB, which I've read
up on and know how to import into the Vista Contacts

What I can't find is if there is a way to import from the Outlook
Express directory into the Windows Mail message area

Is this possible? John

Re: Will Windows Mail Import Outlook Express Messages?

You need to copy the entire OE msg store to the Vista PC before you can then
import into Mail.
A link with specific instructions was posted a few days ago by Gary

See the section on WinMail here: www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx Its a bit
tricky, but it will work.

Re: Will Windows Mail Import Outlook Express Messages?

Thanks... but I'm not much for registry editing, so I've told her
to go through her Outlook Express emails and forward anything she
considers important to my address, and I'll just send them back to
her after I have her Vista & Windows Mail up and running (I was
able to copy the OE backup I made awhile ago to the laptop I gave
her to use while waiting for the new Dell, but that was a simple
process of adding her identity to OE and then copying the entire
sub-directory I had on USB drive to the laptop)

If it wasn't for the fact that she's semi-retired and not a lot of
extra $$, I would have had her pay the extra $150 to Dell to have
them use XP instead of Vista... I'm just going to have to learn
enough about Vista, quickly, to get her running when the new Dell
arrives this Saturday

You shouldn't need to edit the registry. Copy the ENTIRE OE message store to
the Vista machine, in a folder created in the User's Documents folder. Then
just import from within Windows Mail....

Ok... I'll try that... her new Dell is supposed to arrive 11-22
and I'm going to her house the next day to get back my laptop and
get her up and running... should be an interesting day!

Some more detailed info here:
Copy ALL the mail files from OE (including the one called Folders.dbx) and
paste them into a folder you have created on your new machine, to which you
have read/write permissions. A folder within your Documents folder would
seem to be the best place.
Then in Windows Mail, do File-Import-Messages, highlight Microsoft Outlook
Express, and click next.
Make sure that "Import from an OE6 Store directory is checked, (that's why
you need to copy the folders.dbx file, because that tells WM the folder is
an OE message store) and click on OK. Browse to the folder you created.

I think I paid $35 for an OEM Dell copy of XP, with Product ID code from
Amazon Marketplace. The Dell drivers that came with Vista also worked under
XP. Are you saying that an XP downgrade would cost $150?

Yes, $150 to have Dell install XP instead of Vista

You can go to Dell's page for more information

Ok... thanks

She is using my (mostly unused) laptop with XP, so I am going to
drill down in local settings for her account and copy the entire
Outlook Express directory to USB drive

Re: Will Windows Mail Import Outlook Express Messages?

If you read the directions on that page, they are very clear and have
nothing to do with editing the registry.

Ok... I went back to www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx to read again

Last time I did not get past the top section, where it does
have directions for registry editing

When I am at her (borrowed) laptop and have OE open, I'll see what I
can find for "Outlook Express (or possibly Outlook) message store"
and then copy that to USB drive to move to the new Dell w/Vista

Thansk... John
