When I disable McAfee Antivirus scanning I can send a simple text email but still can't send emails with attachements. | Re: mail not sending but receiving mail Hi, If it is an antivirus causing this problem, you will have more success uninstalling it rather than just turning it off. If that does the trick, suggest you use an antivirus that doesn't cause this - I use Avast on Vista and have no problem - in my experience, there is no need to disable Avast email scanning. check this link for other solutions 'Failed to connect to server - Tech Support Guy Forums' (http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/...ct-server.html) SIW2 -- SIW2 |

When you get that send error, are you sending from home, or on a laptop away from home? -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Eileen" <Eileen@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:197BB00F-2471-4AB4-ADFC-84B64EE12DDF@microsoft.com... >I am having the same problem as John. | Re: mail not sending but receiving mail
Regarding the first error message, NTL is refusing you access to their SMTP server because you are connecting via another provider, wlms-broadband.com. In general, you must always use the SMTP server that belongs to your connection provider. This may also be the cause for the send failure with Wanadoo. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "JohnMac" <JohnMac@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8263F4BD-248A-4634-9B2A-EAEFE372D091@microsoft.com... > ERROR MESSAGES: an unknown error has occured.account PoP ntlworld.com Server > SMTP.ntlworld.com Protocol:SMTPserver response 421 > aamtaout04-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [81.141.88.87] Port > 25 Secure server(SSL);No server error 421 error Number 0x800CCC67 > > 'your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.possible causes for > th=is include server problems, network problems,or long periods of > inactivity.Accountpop.wanadoo.co.uk server:SMTP.wanadoo.co.uk Protocol > SMTP,Port 25 Secure(SSL)No socket error: 10053 error number 0x800CCC0F > -- > JM > > > "Eileen" wrote: > >> I am having the same problem as John. | Re: mail not sending but receiving mail
McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail. Disabling its email scanning is often not sufficient. The only way you can prove or disprove that McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...107083&lc=1033 If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus program which is more compatible with Windows Mail: AVG free edition: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff and Avast free edition: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select 'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install. Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus, for the reason explained here: http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "David Robinson" <drobinson@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:75A34352-8CF7-45E2-A9CC-E4769830E224@microsoft.com... > When I disable McAfee Antivirus scanning I can send a simple text email but > still can't send emails with attachements. > > David > > "Peter Foldes" wrote: > >> What happens if you disable your Anti Virus from scanning incoming or outgoing emails. | Re: mail not sending but receiving mail
I have this problem with the "outgoing.verizon.net" SMTP server. BTW; the incoming is a usually (always?) a POP3 server; the outgoing is usually (always?) an SMTP server based on my experience with Verizon and GMAIL settings. This problem ONLY occurs with my brother's setup . I am visiting the bozo for the holidays. At home I have the Verizon/FOIS provided router. I access my email both with a DELL640m WIDOWS/XP AVG/Zonealarm, no mcfool, etc. and my XV6800 Mobile Windows PC/phone. (Not really relevant, but I thought I would prevent some emails.) SO; this setup works at home and every FREE WI-FI hot-spot between NJ and CA. (slight exaggeration). He has a DSL connection through a NETGEAR WNR834B wireless router. So I have been focusing on the router setup. But here is the catch: My GMAIL/SMTP/OUTGOING works just dandy. Just the VERIZON/SMTP/OUTGOING doesn't. I have spoken to Verizon and they say its the other guys fault. (This is why mainframe commercial shops try to stick with one vendor.) Any ideas as to what settings I should look at on the Router? on Verizon? thanks -oldfart |

| Re: mail not sending but receiving mail
The type of Internet connection or router does not matter. The difference between Verizon and Gmail is that the former uses port 25, while the latter uses port 465. Port 25 is usually blocked when away from one's home ISP. For more on this policy see: http://www.postcastserver.com/help/P..._Blocking.aspx The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows: 1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser). 2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP. 3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details. 4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "John Ringoes" <John.Ringoes.3l37vb@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:John.Ringoes.3l37vb@DoNotSpam.com... > > I have this problem with the "outgoing.verizon.net" SMTP server. Sorry to be so thick but; I had considered the port being blocked but discounted it. If outgoing.verizon.net:25 is blocked by verizon, then how is it possible for me to send emails from home? After all, wouldn't the mail I sent from home also be blocked? -dummy |

| Re: mail not sending but receiving mail
I didn't say that Verizon is doing the blocking. You said the problem only happens when visiting your brother. I assume he has an ISP other than Verizon. *That* ISP (like most ISPs) will not take kindly to your attempt to use a port 25 SMTP server other than their own. Incidentally, it is customary in newsgroups to quote the message one is replying to. It makes for better continuity. | Re: mail not sending but receiving mail
Gary; Let's see if I have this straight: <I am using Outlook 2003> 1- At home my ISP and mail server (Verizon) lets pass any outbound mail from Outlook with port 25 specified because the provided IP address is for a Verizon smtp server? (1-a Actually since Verizon is not on the list of ISPs blocking port 25 yet, they are probably ignoring the whole IP/PORT number?) 2- On the road (my brothers house) his ISP (AT&T) rejects any outbound mail from OUTLOOK with port 25 specified IF the provided IP address is for other than AT&T SMTP server? (2-a Which means that AT&T is scanning all my traffic??) -ringoes Gary VanderMolen I didn't say that Verizon is doing the blocking. You said the problem only happens when visiting your brother.
