Age of Empires II - Multiplayer problem - Vista

We encountered the problem as well when trying to play Age of Empires Multi-player games over the LAN between a Vista Machine and an XP machine.

I am still researching the LAN problem, but can offer you a little help.

A work around to the problem that I have used in the interim is as follows:

1. Get an RS232 crossover cable, be sure to check if your computers have a spare 9 pin or 25 pin RS232 Port on each machine and buy the correct cable to suit. The RS232 ports are D type connectors on the back of your box with male pins in them. Ask at your local computer dealer if your not sure.

Note: some of the newer PC's and Laptop's do not have RS232 ports.

2. connect the RS232 crossover cable to a serial port on each computer.

3. Go to the multiplayer section of Age of Empires II and select the Connection type as "Serial Connection for Direct Play".

4. From there create/host a game on one computer and join with the other computer as you would on a normal Lan game.

The only problem here is that this will only work for 2 players at a time.
