Automatic Updates refuses to turn on. XP SP3 messed up my computer

Hi, I am running Windows XP Media Center edition, version:2002 SP3. Ever
since I downloaded SP3 to this computer, I haven't been able to download any
updates from microsoft. I've tried starting it through the Services and
changing the startup type and all, but every time I change it to automatic or
manual, it reverts back to disabled when I click apply, then close it out and
bring it back up. When I try to press the start button it gives: Could not
start the Automatic updates service on local computer. Error 1058: The
service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no
enabled devices associated with it.

Tried these?

Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.

If both of those methods fail...

Get the tool and run it and then try to update*.

* try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive an
"Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP or
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005:

I'm running Windows Home Edition and am having the same problem as the others since downloading SP3. I recieve error number 0x8DDD0018 on the Windows update site. I have attempted all the suggestions here and on the Microsoft site to no avail. Is there any help out there for a viable solution? Is my computer permanently compromised??? Why is this happening -- is Microsoft negligent in the creation of SP3? (I have run several scans using different anti spyware programs and have not found my computer to be infected with Vundo.)

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008"
code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from
the Microsoft Update Web site

Make sure that you have automatic updates turned on.

Make sure that the Remote Procedure Call Locator is not disabled:
Click Start, select Run and type in:
services.msc
Locate " Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator".
If it is disabled, then right click on it, go to 'Properties', change to 'manual' and
Apply.
Try Windows Update Again

and/or

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page" error message when you try to install an update

i had a similar error on Windows XP 64-bit (SP2)...

"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
requested page" with no error code. this seems to have started
shortly after performing my last successful Windows Update sometime in
late July of 2008, go figure. the good news however that after
searching and trying many different methods to repair this, one (and
only one) worked for me and was pretty easy to do. Be advised that
this seems to apply to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). this fix may
not be appropriate for earlier versions of Windows XP, such as SP1.
use at your own risk but don't worry, even if you make the changes
below and it doesn't fix the problem it shouldn't have any negative
impact on you OS or web browser.

PLEASE LEAVE ANY FEEDBACK AND LET ME/US KNOW IF THIS WORKS FOR YOU!

here are the steps:

- Close any Windows Update browser window(s)
- Open your registry editor by going to the windows "Start" button at
the bottom-left of your screen. click the "Run" button located on the
right side of the start menu. type "regedit", click OK.
- You will see what looks like a bunch of folders on the left and
their associated values on the right pane. You will only be working
from the left side pane here.
- From the left pane, click the plus sign for "HKEY_CURRENT_USER",
then again for "Software", then again for "Microsoft", then again for
"Windows", then again for "CurrentVersion", then again for "Internet
Settings".
- From here look for the sub-branch (folder) named "User Agent", this
will be directly under the "Internet Settings" branch (folder).
- Highlight the "User Agent" branch, right-click on it and select
"Delete".
- Close the Registry Editor.

This should solve your problem if you've tried all else and nothing
has worked

Log on is set to local system account and profile is enabled

Did you consider that your system may be infected with malware "Vundo" and
family/friends etc
