Windows version? Is this a sudden, new problem? Did Automatic Updates ever work? Can you use Windows Update website successfully (assuming WinXP)? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Please see this page http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm then post back to this thread with the information we'd need to be able to assist you properly. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Tom wrote: > I go to services.msc and try to start automatic updates it says error 1058 > The service cannot be started, I also try to do this too. > Click Start >> Run >> > Type the follow command in the Open box. > "regsvr32 wuapi.dll" (w/o quotes) > Press Ok > Type "regsvr32 wups.dll" (w/o quotes) > Press Ok > Type "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll" (w/o quotes) > Press Ok > Type "regsvr32 wucltui.dll" (w/o quotes) > Press Ok > Still won't work. > > Any other ideas? > Thanks > Tom |

| Re: Can not get Windows auto updates to work!
Windows XP Pro Srv2 started on Tuesday the 13th, All updates up to then. I had my computer off for the last week, vacation. Started up on Monday. Running McAfee and that is up-to date. I also run Spyware Doctor which I ran today again to see if something got me. Only small junk. I have tryed the Windows web site and it gives me an error (0x8002801D) I will look at that page. Thanks for the help! Tom "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > Windows version? Is this a sudden, new problem? Did Automatic Updates ever > work? Start | Run | (type or copy/paste) regsvr32 MSXML3.dll | [OK] If no joy, see.... WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx Steps to take before you install WinXP SP3 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 <IMHO> Temporarily disable all real-time protections afforded by your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications, and any third-party firewall prior to installing SP3. If you disable a third-party firewall, make sure you then enable the Windows Firewall: The machine should not be connected to the internet without an active firewall. NB ZA Free users: Uninstall ZA Free via Add/Remove Programs and enable the Windows Firewall before installing SP3. After installing SP3 /and rebooting twice/, check to make sure your real-time protections have been re-enabled; If you disabled a third-party firewall, remember to re-enable it and disable the Windows Firewall. </IMHO> Or just skip to the chase and open a free support incident...
