Just installed XP SP3 and first thing I noticed was that I couldn't print
from any app. Seems that the SP had turned off the Print Spooler Service.
Should this happen? If so I reckon it will unsettle a few people.

What happened when you turned the service back on?

Then it printed normally. It also stayed on when I rebooted. It's just a
bit odd that I had to turn it on, something I can't remember having to do
previously in all the time I've been using XP.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed SP3?
Did you install SP3 via Windows Update or Automatic Updates? If the latter,
what is your Automatic Update setting?

Anti-Virus -- AVG Free. Firewall -- Online Armour with HIPS deactivated
until after I'd installed SP3 and cleared the print problem. Anti-spyware --
Spybot & Ad-Aware installed but not running while installing SP3. I used
Windows Update, not Auto Update. Why would my firewall or AV turn off the
print spooler -- they never have before, e.g. when I installed SP1 & 2?
I have the same problem. However, when I "start" the print spooler, it only
stays on for a short while. All of my printers have been removed from my
printers folder, as well. I have installed, uninstalled XP SP3 twice
now...same problems both times. Anyone have any ideas???

Have same problem. Printers removed and print spooler will not stay on even
after starting it up repeatedly. Problem began 4 days ago after computer
shut down at night. Nothing to do with SP3 in my case. Continually get
Spooler App error.

Hi there,
Did you try uninstalling the printer(s) and reinstalling it/them?
Best regards,
Michel Denie

I had a problem with a print spooler that wouldn't stay started, but my problem was with the print driver. I replaced the printer (and driver) and it's been working since. I had tried different drivers for the printer, but all of them seemed to be a problem.
I'm having trouble with SP3 and printing, but it's only in Great Plains.
