I just reinstalled my laptop, it looks like windows update did the 2.0 before
1.1. Can I just ignore the fact that it thinks it needs 1.1 for the .net? I
get the following error for 1.1 0x643. In my history it shows:

Windows XP Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Thursday, January
    19, 2006 Microsoft Update website
Windows XP Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019) Wednesday, January
    18, 2006 Microsoft Update website

    0x643 / Microsoft.net framework 1.1 and 2.0

    Hello all,
i have been painfully spending the past 3months attempting to load windows
on my new pc i built. After trying different combinations of parts i have
come to belive that the problem lies within the software. All device drivers
are correct and stable(more than the most upto date drivers suggested by the
supplier) yet are unable to install microsoft.net framework 1.1 and
    microsoft.net framework 2.2 x86.

I do not have them installed on my pc as far as locating them as to the
directions from the support sites, i bought my copy of windows xp pro sp2
from a well known supplier (officeworks) and am positive that my copy is a
    valid genuine version.

    I am running:
    Celeron D 331 @2.66GHz
    Asus P5V800-MX
1024 RAM -64 Shared Intergrated Graphics

Windows Xp Pro Sp2 Upgrade Academic Edition
    (compleate install not upgraded)

With all avalible updates installed excluding Microsoft.net 1.1
    and Microsoft.net 2.2 x86.

Should i worry about these or is there something i can do?????

This was a suggestion from MS for 0x643

    Please try the following:

Check the My_Computer_Zone has FullTrust permissions enabled:

    1. Click Start
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Double-click Administrative Tools
    4. Click to select the latest version of the Microsoft .NET Framework
    Configuration tool.
    5. Drill-down to Runtime Security Policy
    6. Then Machine
    7. Then Code Groups
    8. Then Machine
    9. Code Groups
    10. All_Code
    11. Then Right-click on My_Computer_Zone.
    12. Click the Permission Set tab
    13. Verify and/or change permission set to FullTrust.
    14. Reboot the machine
    15. Try the installation once more and see if this works for you.

I seem to not have permission to change any values there. While
My_Computer_Zone appears to have FullTrust, all in the tree above it have No
    permission.

    Opinions?

    RE: 0x643 and .Net

I had the same (?) problem with the latest update for .net2.
Tried re-installing all .net versions and/or service packs: now everything
    was coming up with errors!
Read through many posts here and elsewhere; almost tried the cleanup tool
available but then read some disturbing news of systems having to be
re-installed, etc. and decided to re-think it. Didn't want to uninstall all
    ..Net components either.

Anyway, for me at least, this worked: ran the Windows Installer Cleanup
Tool, highlighted anything labeled Microsoft .Net and removed it. Then went
back to Windows Update page, ran express; as usual it reported the .Net2
update was downloaded and ready to be installed. Told it to install ----- it
    did!
And now everything seems back to normal.
Hope it's this easy for others.

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, or
2.0, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows
    Installer error code "1603"

i installed Windows Install Cleanup, but .Net 2.0 and 3.0 aren't listed. In
Update it indicates they are download already, need to be installed.
