Updated driver: IDT Hi Def Audio CODEC: Disabled my Audio device !

I was encouraged today bt WindowsUpdate to install (yesterday's) optional
new version (from Sep 2007 ?) of the "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC"
(driver), and having done so, after a system Restart, I got the message "No
sound device installed" (and the loudspeaker icon was crossed out red in the
    System Tray).

I then entered the CP - System - Device handler - Sound device - and 'rolled
back' to the previous driver version, then OK'd and immediately my Sound
Device was back again, fresh and sound (literally).

How is it that we obviously can not trust Microsoft to provide fully tested
software pushed by Windows Update ? What is MS intending to do to avoid
    problems like this ?

OR: What did I do wrong to experience this ? Did I miss a warning that
installing this update might remove my Sound Device ?

Does there exist a means to "re-enable" the Sound Device with the updated
    driver version installed ?

(I'm running Vista (Home Premium) SP 1 (installed on Apr 18 through
WindowsUpdate) on a DELL 9400 Inspiron LapTop)

The usual procedure is to NOT download hardware drivers from Microsoft for
hardware devices that are made by companies other than Microsoft.

The correect procedure is to go to the web site of the appropriate
manufacturer and get the drivers there.

That may be, but with IDT, or Sigmatel, or whoever may run it today, Nobody
is getting us the drivers. I spoke with my manufacturer who's only response
was, and I quote, "just don't update to SP1"

As I stated in a different post, its like going to a Doctor and saying "it
hurts when I do this" and his only response is "well, don't do that!"

It just gets a bit frustrating, I need the updated sigmatel driver, but
sigmatel is now IDT, who doesn't make new drivers so I have heard, and my
system manufacturer is no help either.

Just tried it myself, installed fine, so it sain, rebooted, but no sound..
icon in tray did not have x through it, speaker output set to speaker, the
green bar even went up and down to the music in the volume control, but no
sound made it to the speakers. Looked in control panel and the idt codec had
the yellow exclamation on it, and also, after installing the idt codec, I
have 16 sound devices all labeled SndTDriverV32.........16 of them!!!???
    why and what is that???
had to re-install the sigmatel codec to get the speakers working, even
though that will prevent me from getting sp1

Didn't you, so far, install Vista SP1 ? Why not ? I did, and had no trouble,
except from this darned IDT driver update that disabled my sound device.

sp1 wouldn't even show up as an available update, was on chat support for 4
hrs with microsoft, finally got sp1 available, they cut me loose, said all
was well, did the 1 hr sp1 install routine, and voila....sp1
installed......NO SOUND!!!! getting tired of this

Re: Updated driver: IDT Hi Def Audio CODEC: Disabled my Audio devi

As my post above states, I was on Microsoft chat support for 4 hours,
deleted sigmatel, installed IDT, no sound and it installed 16 sound devices
labeled SndTDriverV32, whatever that is, but it did allow me to install SP1.
Rebooted after SP1 finished, still no sound with IDT and the 16 other
devices. Strange thing is that if I played music, the sound level indicator
on the volume bar moved up and down with the music, but nothing came out my
speakers, speakers were enabled as my default also, but nothing. I went into
device manager and started uninstalling all of the 16 SndTDriverV32 devices,
one at a time, one of them required a reboot to delete, then finally I
uninstalled the new IDT driver, rebooted, this time I got the x over my sound
icon in the tray and it said "no sound device installed" (obviously) I then
installed the latest Sigmatel codec that was actually the one that was
blocking the SP1 update, reboot, and all works fine! got sound, got SP1, and
no problems at all. fingers crossed

Sorry, forgot to mention mine is a Gateway also WanttoknowSal, and System
restore to a point before you installed the IDT codec should revert you back
to the Sigmatel that was working, but you probably won't be offered the SP1
    update then.

I have the same problem, and agree...why the hell offer a download that
doesn't work. Yeesh. Anyway, I'm maybe not as handy with a computer as you. I
treid to follow your path: CP - system - device manager (is that what you
meant by "device handler?")...but then the langauge deviates even further
from what you wrote...I need literal instructions! Please. In device manager
there are "sound, video and game controllers." is that what you mean by
"sound device"? And how do "roll the previous driver version back"? I would
love to...but it ain't bvious to me how.

I curse and spit onthis optional download. Never again.

I had the exact same experience. It has been very frustrating and I thought
I did something wrong! It is so good to see your post. I never download the
'optional' updates, but on 4/30, I saw the audio update and thought, well,
why not, perhaps it will work better. Now it does not work at all. I have
tried reinstalling, restoring, using my original CD. Please keep me posted
and I will do the same for you if we find a solution. I have a contact at
work and will take the computer to him tomorrow if I do not find an answer
    today.
