    RE: update (KB951847)

    Hello
I have just had this enormous update offered through Windows Update.
Do I need it? I am not a developer and as far as I know I don't use .Net.
Is there any security implication if I don't download this??

Am I the only who gets tired of Microsoft's endless - almost daily -
updates? One would think that they might have sorted out the problems before
    they shipped the software!

I always review and then approve/disallow the updates because there are
times when MS tries to slip in non-important things and things that are not
related to security - which I think is wrong, personally.

    Re: update (KB951847)

Theoretically, if you've been offered the update then you are using .NET. It
was probably installed by some other piece of software which will need it in
order to function. Check in Add/Remove Programs to see if any versions of .NET
are currently installed. If they are, it is probably best to update them.

In most cases (to the best of my current understanding) the update isn't nearly
as large as it says it is, so I'd suggest you try starting the download and see
    what happens.

The latest Net Framework 3.5 Windows Update is approx 250MB. I wish to
download the file separately so as to install on a number of PCs rather then
individually from WU. Would someone please direct me to the relevant MS
address to be able to do this?

Sorry, this is my 1st time & messed it up. I tried to install several times
and it wouldn't install. Should I try to find out how to get it to install?
I sure don't want my computer to stop working. Installed a update for my
printer and now my printer doesn't work. So I'm gun shy now.

    Re: Kb951847

Thank you for the link. Have another problem which I need to resolve 1st
because without it I can't do the .NET Framework issue. I installed an
update for my printer and immediately afterward my printer quit working.
After much searching, I was informed that my driver wasn't installed. I've
spent hours on this and posted several messages in Dell's forum but could not
even find the messages afterward so have had no success with Dell. Could you
possibly help me? I'm totally confused at what steps I need to do. I went
into printer properties where it told me the driver wasn't installed and did
I want to install it...clicked Yes...but after several attempts it's still
not installed. Obviously, I know just enough not to really do me any good.
In other words, when it comes to troubleshooting, I stink. I don't want to
waste hours like I did yesterday when I know I'm not going to find the
answer. I think I can go the Windows Update to find the offending update but
don't know what I do after that. I tried rolling back the driver (of course,
not knowing really what I was doing) and that didn't work. Believe it was
then that I was given the option to reinstall the driver. My printer is a
Dell Photo AIO 924. Checked the printer documentation and did all the steps
they suggested with no luck. According to the doc., the printer is in All
Programs so that means it's installed. Thought maybe I could
uninstall/reinstall but don't want to do anything until I can get clearer
direction on the way to go. Would really appreciate any help you can give a
poor, struggling computer operator and I use that term lightly.

Have you been able to find anything out? I installed an update for my
printer and now my printer doesn't work. I've spent hours trying to figure
out how to get it fixed with no success. I don't even want to attempt
putting .NET Framework 3.5 on until I have a workaround in case it messes
    anything up.

RE: KB951847 - Causes REBOOT Loop

I let this install from Windows Updates - it notifies me and I click OK. my
Vista Business Notebook is now stuck in an endless reboot. Stage 3
installing updates, do not shutdown computer -- goes 0 to 99%, reboots, then
    over and over and over.
WHAT can I do to fix my messed up computer?

    Re: Kb951847

Thanks for that, but after I installed the file, I ran Windows Update.
I did the Custom scan for updates.
It reported I needed the pack !!!
I can't be downloading 250Mb for all 10 PCs at our offices.
    What am I doing wrong

    Re: KB951847

You'll need to install *all three* updates listed in
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-6450b0212565
in case you're running Windows XP (or Windows Server 2003) to
satisfy the stupidity of the current detection mechanism of
Windows Update and/or the update package (KB951847) itself.

Be asured, that MS is aware of the issue, that the package of
KB951847 for Windows XP is anything but reasonable. Why they
don't stop the distribution of KB951847 in the meanwhile and
before getting the things right, is something only MS can tell.

    Re: KB951847

However, when I tried Windows Update, it said it was going to download over
200MB, but when I pressed "Install" it actually only downloaded 16Mb.
So I can live with that, it is easier than installing all three, and
presumably it updates the list of updates correctly when it has finished.

This catalog update contains 9 files. Do I install all of them and is order
    important?

Yeah I did that and when I download that one item (for Vista for example),
the one download contains 9 separate files.

What do I do with these 9 separate files?

    RE: update (KB951847)

I might be naive but as long as there our forces out there trying to get into
my computer I hope Microsoft is still proactively trying to make it more
difficult and providing me the updates to protect myself. Also, if I have to
choose between having Microsoft loading something on my computer or someone I
do not know loading something on my computer. I'll take Microsoft.

That said; this update and the KB960082 have been a royal pain. I support
10 companies and these updates have not gone smooth on any of the domains I
support. So your issues are not an anomaly.
