I have vista business x64, and when i try to install SP1, whether through windows update, or the standalone installer, even with all antivirus and firewalls disabled, i get error code: WindowsUpdate_80073712 WindowsUpdate_dt000. windows update appears to get 12% through the download everytime before it fails. what can i do to make it install properly? |

| RE: SP1 error 80073712
Update: I have tried the "fixes" metioned in other 80073712 error problems, such as the pending.xml file(that doesnt seem to even exist in that folder), and i've reinstalled windows update, and i've already installed the update: KB947821, and if i try to install it again, it says something like "not applicable to this system." i've also tried another fix metioned elswhere to run the command "net stop wuauserv" and delete the files in software distribution folder, then run "net start wuauserv"...that did not work either. any more ideas? Mike, That update requires special handling before it will be applicable (listed in the KB article). Steps 1-4 below are absolutely needed. Also make sure the architecture is correct (x86 vs x64). Thanks. To manually install and run CheckSUR, follow these steps: 1. Click Start , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. 2. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue. 3. Type reg add HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreCorruptTimeStamp /t REG_SZ /d "0" /f, and then press ENTER. 4. Type reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CheckSUR\, and then press ENTER. 5. Download and then install CheckSUR from the Microsoft Download Center. (See the "Update information on the Microsoft Download Center" section.) 6. As soon as the file has been successfully downloaded, double-click the file to install and run CheckSUR. -- Leo Lie Windows Update Client Microsoft "Mike" <Mike@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A7C8AC9D-8C40-4321-AF9E-2B5C38292A79@microsoft.com... > i mentioned that i already tried to install the kb947821 manually and it > says > "update does not apply to this system". just tried again for the hell of > it > and it gave me the same result. > > > "Leo Lie [MSFT]" wrote: > >> Try to install KB947821 manually and see if it fixes the problem. Ok, I followed your directions and got the KB947821 update to install. I then tried to install SP1 and got the same error message at 12%. the manual install of SP1 also stops with the same error message. thanks for the help so far, any other ideas we can try? just remembered something else, i've had the update KB943411 on my list to install for quite some time now, but it has failed every time since i initially tried to install it, so i just hid it to install SP1, but that one fails with error code 8007371B. not sure if it's related, i guess it's a windows sidebar update, but maybe that's what's hanging up my SP1 install? Mike, it's time to use the free support. Be sure to mention that you have run KB947821 (they'll ask for the log), and also the fact that KB943411 won't install. Thanks. Well, I've tried just about everything with microsoft...the checkSUR update, taking ownership of and deleting the pending.xml file(does not exist), deleting the "softwaredistribution" file and prefetch files, running in clean boot mode or safe mode, uninstalling Norton Antivirus, they did their easy assist remote desktop several times and deleted and renamed several registry keys...seems like i'm forgetting something else too...but none of it worked. now they're telling me that i have to reinstall vista...or something about maybe a standing upgrade or something...but that costs money to my knowledge, and i already bought a 64bit full version of vista, so i'm not buying another one, that's pointless. so i'll let you know what I actually do when it happens...but they coudln't fix my problem "Leo Lie [MSFT]" wrote: > Mike, it's time to use the free support. yup, had to reinstall vista entirely....it worked...problem solved...but now i have to reinstall everything...and now randomly my external hard drive isn't working...so maybe vista just isn't recognising it, i dont know. but hopefully everyone else doesn't have to reinstall, but we tried everything up to that point and that's all that was left. good luck all, hope you do better than i did, signing out...
