It looks like a lot of people are having the same problem. Is there a fix?

Yes, lots of people and my time is valuable, so it can just stay uninstalled
until the problem is rectified properly, when in doubt reinstall everything
diagnostics is a cop is not ensuring outcome realisation for the customer!

The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error
message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712"
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712

    and/or
Reinstall the Windows Update Agent - see A new version of the Windows Update Agent is
    available
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928

I have done this and downloaded the Windows Update agent and it still will
not install any updates. So what now?

    Did you reboot?

    Hello,

0x80073712 translate to Component store is corrupt.

Please run the Checksur.exe tool to see if that resolves the issue.

    Re: WindowsUpdate_80073712 WindowsUpdate_dt000

I had the same issue as most, but was a bit more complicated than most. I upgraded from XP to Vista, did the updates and patches, rebooted, loaded my programs, rebooted and the issue began. This was a one-day affair. There was no using the restore point for me.

After my search on the net, I came to the simple conclusion that it is an issue with the Windows installer, version 3.x, whatever. Of course with windows, you can't uninstall or reinstall if the error is with the install program itself. Some critical installs from Microsoft would not install, so here is what fixed my issue:

I ran the CheckSUR and no issues were found, even though it would not install the critical updates. I reseted the registry information for the Windows installer software:

These were the steps I followed and it worked.

    Method 1. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175)

Unregister Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.

    2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unregister", and then press ENTER.

I did not do steps 3 and 4 on the above link.

I then downloaded the latest Windows Installer and installed it:
System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) [April 2009]
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...%2f%2bcA%3d%3d

The good thing about these steps was no loss of the install logs or records of programs previously installed. After I installed the latest installer, updates were not an issue. Hope this helps.

    NOTE:
Be sure to back up / set a restore point AND saving a copy of the registry before starting. I would suggest doing it before starting METHOD 1.

Method one worked for me, after all the other fixes applied and tried it's
nice to finally get the right one.
