Update KB936181 "successful" almost daily since 8/14/07...

I'm running Vista Home on a new laptop. The following update:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)

has installed MANY times since 8/14/07, all of which are indicated as
"successful." I just did a manual update (instead of letting it
automatically update), and when the laptop rebooted, there was the message
again stating that an update was available and it's the same update.

    Help!?

Give downloading and installing KB941833 a try:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

If that one fails too and/or KB936181 is still beeing reoffered afterwards,
have a look into the "Known Issues" section of the MSKB article dealing
    with KB936181: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181

That seems to have worked! Thanks!

I am running Windows XP Home and am getting the same problem. I have
installed it numerous times and it says succcessful, but it always shows up
as needing to install. I even went to the problems site and uninstalled it
with the run command and then re-installed. Same problem. Can anyone help?

My PC is also updating the same XML security patch repeatedly.
My last entry in the log file :
    "MSI (s) (AC:80) [15:06:09:921]: Product: MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181) --
    Configuration completed successfully."
Then the update is downloaded for installation again IMMEDIATELY.

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line

    %windir%\msxml4-KB936181-enu.LOG

    Click OK or press Enter
    Please post the msxml4-KB936181-enu.LOG

I have the same issue with KB36181 - running Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have done as requested and generated the LOG file but is is too long to
    post in this discussion group.

Are there any salient points within the LOG file which I could pick out and
post separately? Or another method to get the entire LOG file across ?

Re: Update KB936181 "successful" almost daily since 8/14/07...

My apologies over the blank previous post. I am new to tis forum.

I have had the same problem with both KB941831 and KB941833.

Following the MS guidance, and what is below works for me - so far.

Have theMS web site download page for the relevant update ready to click on
    download

    Uninstall the update.

Go to your folder Windows/system32 and delete msxml4.dll

Go back to the website download page and download the update. When asked
    'Run' the file.

When you are advised the update is installed, restart your PC.

Check that the upgraded .dll file has been installed.

See the 'Known issues with this security update' here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941833

I had a look at the 'Known Issues' Guidance but how do you do what is
suggested, ie used v.60.0 or alter 'client' applications.

Thanks for your post. I have attempted what you suggested without success.
I was unable to uninstall the K8936181 update because it was not listed in my
installed update listing. However, I keep getting prompted to install it and
continually receive messages indicating that is was installed successfully.

I tried deleting the "msxml4.dll" file as you suggested, but my system would
not allow me to delete it.

I have attempted the other suggestions by Ottmar without success. My
encountered an error message when installing the KB941833 update and was
    unable to install it.

I also looked at the known issues involving KB936181 and did not see
    anything to help me.

Any suggestions that you or anyone else has are welcome. This repeated
Update KB936181 is a new one for me and I started having this problem on
    12/14/07.

I have the same problem on my new desktop ,did you find solution?? please
    advise Doug

RE: Update KB936181 "successful" almost daily since 8/14/07...

After successfully installing it last August it began to pop up again a few
days ago. Not remembering when it came out I tried again and again to install
it. It won't take and keeps popping up in my task bar as an update ready to
    download.

RE: Update KB936181 "successful" almost daily since 8/14/07...

Here's what I did - this seemed to work for me.

Download this file, but don't run it (KB941833):
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

This is a WinZip executable. I have WinZip installed on my PC. If you have
WinZip, and you right-click on the file, you can choose "WinZip" and then
choose "open with WinZip". The file will open in WinZip, and you will see
that there are two files inside the EXE file:

    1) msxml.msi
    2) _sfx_manifest_

Extract those - easiest thing to do, is drag them out of the WinZip window.

Right click on the MSI file, and click on install. The installer will run,
and it will give you more info while it is running. Mine wasn't installing
originally, because I had PasswordSafe running, and I had Norton Confidential
running. When I closed those applications, the XML update finished
    successfully.

I had to use SysInternals Process Explorer to close Norton Confidential. I
had to "suspend" the process first, then I had to kill the process.

    Good luck.

    Yes, it works, but it does so until you run Kodak Easyshare Gallery software;
and when you do, it tells you that the XML parser is corrupted or inexisting
and it offers you to Repair. If you repair, the problem comes again

Is there an update for the Easyshare Gallery or, even better, is there
    alternative upload tools?
    http://www.kodakgallery.com/HelpUplo...2259111#upload

Yes, there are. If the software is not functioning properly and putting
the system at risk then it would behoove you to uninstall it and replace
it with something that does function properly and will NOT leave the
    system at risk.

It didn't download for me on Vista. It said that it couldn't open the log
file to complete the download. It asked me to verify the log file location.
    What nonsense!
