Windows Update Error Code 80073712

Hi there,

I am having problems installing 4 updates for Vista.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate, and I'm trying to install updates
KB942763, KB947172, KB905866 and KB943302 (all of which are important,
according to Windows Update). I have been trying for the last two days, but
always get Error Code 80073712, with Update telling me that the installation
failed. Online help is offering no answers for that error code.

I have trawled through some forums and seen a number of people with this
problem, but so far none of the solutions I have tried have worked.

I really hope someone can help.

1. In the "Start" menu, locate "Command Prompt". Right-click and choose "Run
as Administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or
confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2. Type the following commands, then press "Enter" to execute them one by
one. Please note the space before the command and its parameter.

takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G <YourUsername>:F

Note: Please replace <YourUsername> with your logon user name.

3. Please refer to C:\windows\winsxs, and rename the file “pending.xml” to
“pendingOLD.xml”.
4. Please reboot the machine.
5. Download and install WUA 3.0 file from the following link:

Windows Vista (32bit)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

Note: If the system is 64bit, please download and install WUA 3.0 for 64bit
from the link below:

Windows Vista (64bit)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

I have the same Error code 80073712 and Code 80070652 while trying to install
7 updates:

KB905866: Window Email, Junk Email
KB946041: Window Vista
SP1: 2007 Microsoft Office Suite
KB946974: Excel 2007
KB946983: Outlook 2007
KB947801: 2007 Microsoft Office System
KB947945: Outlook 2007 Junk Email

and I have Vista Home Premium Edition 32-bit.

Any help is truly appreciated.

All failing for months..

Without any details - vague answer -

You receive an error message when you try to apply any of the 2007 Office Service Pack 1
packages on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2

Been there done those...last night in the XP install section I found:

"Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation"

Why this would apply only to the cited 4 updates is interesting. Will
advise results.

Office 2007 old? updates:

2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (KB946983)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB947801)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB946974)

And the "new" versions (new KB#'s fixed for Vista?) likewise aren't
successfully installing:

Security Update for Office 2007 (KB934062)
Update for 2007 Microsoft Office system (KB932080)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (Kb936509)
Update for Microsoft Office outlook 2007 (Kb937608)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB936960)

Why would an XP machine do all the other updates but not these four?

Have you tried a manual install of these updates for Office 2007?
Did you try with the Office installation CD in the installation drive before doing the
updates?
Have you tried repair/reinstalling Office 2007?
Did you check the log/s for any error codes?

Yes tried manual install. Dis-installed Office 2007. Manually cleared the
registry and directories per MS instructions. Reinstalled the product from 2
different sources with 2 different product keys.

Even had MS India take control of my machine last month. After the "tech"
finished the machine wouldn't boot ! Thanks Bangalore...

Other updates applied finel Why do only these 4 Office 2007 updates (new
and old versions) crash? There is the crux of the matter and an interesting
programming puzzle...
