Thread: Update for Windows Vista (KB938371) install fails

Another 2nd Tuesday, another failed install. Have Home Premium, AVG Free, Ad
Aware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster (all latest.) Ditched third-party firewall
after last fiasco and still irritated about it. Update says download and
install successful. After lengthy reboot (45m-1hr), check update list to
find this one failed. System does seem to reboot twice altho splash screens
won't confirm. Tried disabling AV and Anti-spy to no avail. Any ideas out
    there?

    Support for Windows Update:
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in

to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).

If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE, call the
above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue (which is
    47830).

Re: Update for Windows Vista (KB938371) install fails

I'm also having this problem on my system (Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
running AVG, AdAware and Spybot along with the usual Windows products. 160GB
    HD, 2.2 Ghz).

I've tried installing this update twice, and each time it spends a long time
shutting down and installing updates, and a long time configuring settings
when starting up again taking approximately 1- 1 1/2 hours.

    Any advice?

Having failed 3 times to install KB938371 I successfully did the
    following
Go to 'Download details: Update for Windows Vista (KB938371)'
    Download standalone KB937267-x86.msu and KB938371-x86.msu
Disable UAC, Anti-virus, Windows firewall and disconnect from internet
Install KB937267 (no reboot required) then KB938371 reboot and it
    successfully installs without multi bootups.

My apology for a typo it should be KB937287 patch. This patch correct
a Windows update problem, and as previously stated does not require
reboot after installing, therefore KB938371 can be installed straigh
after and requires one reboot. Both patches have 32 and 64 bit version
and are on the same webpage at . 'Download details: Update for Window
    Vista (KB938371)' (http://tinyurl.com/2e9vle

Thanks TUNKYTOY. Forgot about downloading standalones, altho one time I
tried it didn't work. But, this time I downloaded it, turned off all the
third-party apps I could, even turned off Win Defender, couldn't turn off UAC
(but that's another long story involving a lazy system admin and a program
called DiableUAC that didn't), made sure they wouldn't start upon reboot,
rebooted and stayed off-line while manually installed the update. My
reminder note helped me get my protection back on (I thought computers were
supposed to eliminate paper and pen?) It was laborious but it worked.

Thanks very much! followed your instructions and managed to install bot
    updates solving my install problem.

As an addendum, KB937387 installed automatically after forcing KB938371.
Reviewed update list and 387 never listed until end. Didn't even know 387 was
available. Read other postings and find problems with 387 and 371 seem to be
interrelated but I was never aware. Don't know the significance but just
wanted to mention it for future reference.

Seems to me that a few people here have AVG. I have had other problem
with AVG in the past, try removing AVG then run the windows updater

Happy to hear the KB937287 & KB938371 standalone sequence worked OK
I think the installing KB937287 had more to do with the success tha
    disabling all the security measures.

Previously I, like many others, have had problems installing vist
update patches, usually the more important ones, and have trie
installing one at a time but with limited success. The standalones hav
had greater success but not 100%. Hopefully future upgrade patches wil
    work smoother

This problem was in early 2008 before Windows Vista Sp1 was available
Since installing SP1 no updates have failed on my computer. The proble
was caused by cliches in the original OS that Mocrosoft released on
majority of machines and wasn't due to AVG or other anti-virus as I a
    aware

Mine did not either. It said that it did not apply to my system

Thanks for the timely post. Come back in 2 years and let us know if
    Service Pack 1 installed properly.
