    KB953838 won't install

Operating System: Windows XP Home OEM Service Pack 3
    Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.11

    Snippit from Windowsupdate.log:

Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the
following update with error 0x8007f0f1: Cumulative Security Update for
Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB953838).

    All other updates installed successfully.

Will visit, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 , and follow the
    instructions...

    Method 1, failed

Method 2, requires exiting this program to run the update agent, so if you
don't hear from me again it worked.

The specific error code was 0x8007f0f1, STATUS_INCOMPARABLE_BRANCHES

Method 2 did not work. Nothing worked until I uninstalled SP3, installed the
update for IE then re-installed SP3 and remaining updates. The remaining
updates required the registering of some dll's.

    Re: KB953838 won't install

I tried downloading the update file from Microsoft Download Site and
installing it manually like I did with SP3 but still had the same error. I
could not uninstall IE7 because I had integrated it into an unattended, XP
installation CD. There was no uninstall file nor was it in the add/remove
programs. You might try uninstalling IE, re-install it then try the update.
If your going to use Windows Update website I would disable the automatic
update service temporarily, delete everything from the SoftwareDistribution
folder, and re-enable the service. You may also need to register the dlls
associated with automatic updates. I couldn't find the list again that I
used but there were about 6 or 7 dlls. Good luck!

That is probably your problem. There is no supported way to integrate IE7 into
the Windows XP installation media; based on past reports in this newsgroup,
while there is a hack that will apparently install IE7 successfully, this hack
appears to result in a broken installation that cannot be reliably patched.

Uninstalling sp3 is not an option. XP SP3 is what is on the CD and the
systems are being deployed by the user using pxe. They won't have the option
of uninstalling sp3. MS should come up with a solution either manually
scripting it or correcting the .dlls

If you're experiencing a problem installing cumulative updates, please start a
new thread in order to avoid confusion. It isn't clear that your problem is
actually the same as that of the original poster.

The original poster's problem was caused by improperly modified install media,
so the solution is to use install media that haven't been improperly modified.
I doubt that Microsoft will be interested in trying to work out a way of
repairing IE7 in this situation, particularly given that there might be multiple
distinct potential problems depending on exactly how the media had been mucked up.

I doubt that Microsoft will be interested in trying to work out a way of
    repairing IE7 in this situation
I found this with a Google search because I'm having the same issue patching IE on two systems where it was integrated using nLite. I know this thread is around 4 months old, but I feel compelled to say this. My intentions are not to attack any of the previous posters; my anger is pointed toward Redmond Washington USA! I registered for this board just to say this.

I modified my Windows installation myself using nLite, and it works fine other than this stupid IE error. So my solution is to give Microsoft the middle finger and not use IE. If I can't apply security updates to it, then it's not worth the risk to use it. If a site requires IE, then I don't need to visit it. It would probably work fine if they didn't have IE so tightly integrated into the OS. My Firefox that's integrated using nLite works just fine, so MS can take IE and stick it up their ass! They need to be interested in making it work if they want to maintain market share. Their market share would plummet overnight if IE was removed and users had a choice when installing their OS. IE only owns the market because it comes installed and Fx doesn't.
