Windows Update fails: error 80072EFE

I have been getting an error from Windows Update: 80072EFE.
I found no help anywhere on this error. Windows update fails to work
although all other websites are available, and the computer works normally.
Update has been working perfectly until a week or two ago. There have been no
new software installs and no system hardware or software changes.

80072EFE ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED
The connection with the server has been terminated.

Which version of Windows is installed and which firewall is being used ?

You're referring to this KB, correct ? :

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message
when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update
Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

You posted " I am not using a proxy. "
Did you try Step 6: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP
proxy configuration

yes, that is the right KB article And, yes I did everything in that
article, including step 6, except this line because of this response

This normally means that something is terminating your connection to
WindowsUpdate.

Can you post the windowsupdate.log file here?

yes, here is the link to the site where you can order Windows XP SP2 Cd

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

THe WindowsUpdate.log is located in the WINDOWS directory [folder],
Keith. You can just enter windowsupdate.log in the Search window to
locate it.

Re: Windows Update fails: error 80072EFE

Same error here. Twice trying to download SP2. The first time it got through
the "Preparing to Download" step and had been in "Downloading" for awhile.
The second time, there was no "Preparing to Download" step. Earlier had no
problem downloading small updates.

O/S is Windows XP V5.1 SP1. No firewall installed yet, unless Windows or AOL
(9.0) has one running that I don't know about. (Will be Grisoft when I'm
fully installed.)

The only available connection out here is phone modem, and I'm getting max
connection of around 24K (40K on a good day, but not for several days now).
Is there a way to get SP2 on CD? I'm not sure I can hold on to a connection
for the 8 hours I'm told it takes for SP2 download.

Open Network Center > Manage Connections > Active connection
Open Properties > TCP/IPv4 > click the Properties button
Make sure that " Obtain an IP address automatically "
and " Obtain DNS server address automatically " are marked.

No, the proxycfg command does not work but I did not ask you to run it
again ... just to set TCP/IPv4 properties to Automatic.
Since the system is running on a college network I'd suggest you contact
the Network Admin in order to resolve this issue.

It's difficult to diagnose whatever the cause is when you're on a
college network, Keith. I am not familiar with how it's set up, viz a
viz proxy servers\gateways\etc.

Something must have changed ... whether it's a network change or
something on the system, the system is now being denied access to
Windows Update. That's fairly common in conjunction with 'unwanted
guests' residing on the system, a change in the firewall's settings, a
'bad' virus definition, or a change in the network's settings

Oh, this page says "Windows Vista community" so I thought this was for Vista.
I am using Vista Business edition, and the vista firewall that came with it.
But I have disabled the firewall, and entered the Microsoft sites that some
similar errors suggested into the trusted sites. I checked the "hosts" file
and there are no entries for windows update or any Microsoft sites. I am not
using a proxy. I have a direct connection through the college network.

Yes, I have posted the file entries for today after a reboot and another
attempt to connect to Winows Update. Just for reference, I noticed the the
error has changed. This often happens. Then it will change again. I have
already performed all the steps in the KB article for error: 0x80072EE2.
Nothing helped. And also, you will notice my location is China. I am a Math
professor teaching here for 6 months. I have been able to access Windows
update here in China on previous trips, and just 2 weeks ago, with no
problem, so I don't think my location is the cause.

ok, I did what you suggested and the proxycfg commmand still doesn't work.
And doing that killed my Internet connection since we have static IP address
here. I had to retype in the IP, gateway, DNS servers, etc. to go back online.
What can I do now?

So, does your OS have that command installed anywhere?

Unfortunately the DLL Help Database hasn't been kept up to date
to know what modules Vista users get.

FWIW in the case of XP it looks as if proxycfg was originally distributed
only in XP Pro and then later distributed in both XPsp1 and XPsp2.

I can't find any information about proxycfg regarding Vista.
There are hits in the KB when both terms are used in a search
but they seem bogus (e.g. no instance of Vista found in the text;
also the same search in TechNet (offline) does come up empty.)

proxycfg is essentially just a way of examining and setting some
specific registry values, so provided Vista maintains the same values
you could probably get the same thing done using RegEdit.

Another way to emulate at least some of its function more procedurally
could be to use bitsadmin /util . I think at least some Vista users get
that tool by default.

i am having the same problem as Keith. machine is 9 month old hp pavillion
bought in us, came with xp, installed full fresh install of vista on it a few
months back. everything else works fine (internet, programs, etc.) with the
exception that updates don't work (windows, defender, etc.) and i cannot
browse to any microsoft sites at all (live, spaces, update, microsoft, etc.).
using another computer on the same network (still running xp) in order to
get to this site. i've browsed through a few dozen strings like this one ...
and tried each set of suggestions one at a time. seems lots of people are
having this similar issue over time. the rest of the system works fine, even
after all trying to solve problems. i'm in china now, wonder it that
variable impacts. tried the ip stack reset you suggest but the netsh int ip
reset command fails to work. other commands all respond as working. problem not solved.

you might want to read upon my update hope it helps

had the same problem some time ago ,80072EFE in Vista 64, No Update or helpbar in Windows, this was caused by my previous settings for proxy in Windows Explorer.
Had connected to a network, but when I was finished, I forgot to remove proxy settings.

To fix:
Windows Explorer / Tools / Internet Options / Connections / LAN - Settings / Unmark Proxy(or delete numbers) Should be ok then.

Hope this is a little bit helpful...

THE REQUESTED OPERATION REQUIRES ELEVATION! Thats what i get when i try in ur
commands... WHY ISNT THERE ANY HELP FOR ALL THESE ERROR CODES?!

Re: Windows Update fails: error 80072EFE

Have you checked your router settings?
It might be that your router is filtering your ActiveX.
Go to your router administration page, then security, and then un-check the box which says 'Filter ActiveX'
Above are general solutions; you will need to adapt them to suit your needs.

Re: Windows Update fails: error 80072EFE

I was having the same error message. I couldn't get Windows Update or Microsoft Security Essentials to update.

After resetting my router. Going from wireless to wired. Resetting the wireless repository. Connecting to a different network. Scanning my machine with the Malicious Software removal tool, Malwarebytes, and AVG nothing come up as a found problem.

Checked the host file. Proxy settings.

Reinstalled all the patches that were installed the last Microsoft updates that installed, it still didn't work. I was stumped.

The only other thing that I noticed on my machine, was that "some" google links were being directed. I ran hijack this. And still no issues found.

Then I tried tdsskiller as to solve the google redirect issue.

It found and cured the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\nsiproxy.sys

I rebooted. And boom! Everything was fixed. WUS and MSE both update now. And my google redirect is fixed.

Just wanted to share that after 3 days of trial and error, it was fixed with TDSSKiller from kaspersky.com

Re: Windows Update fails: error 80072EFE

VERY VERY helpful. Thank you so much for posting the TDSkiller.

One of the very reasons I find this kind of thing frustrating.

I ran Avast and windows firewall and defender. Still got this problem.

I ran a fullavast check, a Full CCleaner, Full Malwarebytes, Full SpyBot S&D, and a Boot time Avast scan.
on top of that I run daily scan with Avast at 3am.

All of that, which took hours to do (the avast bootscan takes over an hour to run.) and I still had the no update windows and defender crap.

I get tdskiller and it found 4 rebooted and cleansed and we're back in business.

oh and Windows IE sucks. if only I could figure out why Google Chrome stopped working..
ohh well.

thanks again
