Windows version? IE version? Which updates are failing to install?

Did you find "Error 0x80070246" (verbatim) listed in your Windows Update
    log?

    Re: Update Error 80070246

    Windows: Vista Home Premium 32bit.
Failed Updates: Update for Windows Vista (KB931836)
Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista
    (KB935652)
    Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)

The error code come from the Windows Update window as follows:
    "Code 80070246 Get help"
The get help does not lead to any fixes. Also, searching the error code
does not produce a solution (only the post from "fernando" that you replied
    too).
    WindowsUpdate log shows the following:

Post a few recent lines of the log that reference "Code 80070246 Get help",
    please, Mike. Otherwise...

Sorry for the delay. As for the log file (posted earlier) there is no
reference to the error code 80070246. That reference only comes from the
windows update screen after it attempts to do the updates. Unless your
talking aboput a different log other then WindowsUpdate.log . Cheers

    Re: Update Error 80070246

    Mike,

See if there's another windowsupdate.log located in

    %userprofile%\appdata\local\Microsoft\windows\windowsupdate.log

Go to Start, in the Start Search line type in %userprofile%
Your UserProfile folder should now appear in the left frame
Open it and then drill down to the windowsupdate.log
Find the date where these updates are listed in the log:

    Update for Windows Vista (KB931836)
Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista

    (KB93565) Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)

Copy&paste that section including any error codes into your reply, please.

What does Vista report with net helpmsg 582

    Perhaps this?

If so, perhaps the download was corrupt.
Is there an alternate way of getting it?
Try getting the same thing from the Windows Update Catalog?

    Good luck

    RE: Update Error 80070246

After uninstalling Vista sp1 RC1 ,in preparation for installing R2, windows
update ceased working - generating the error code 80070246.
The windows version I currently have listed is 6.0.6000 . All the updates
from the uninstall updates page are gone. I'm informed that I have no updates
installed. Going to the download center and grabbing standalone update
packages simply results in Vista informing me that " This package does not
    apply to your system" .

All in all, it's a tad frustrating at the moment. I have a PING 2.0 copy of
the system in question, so reinstalling is not really that much of a problem,
but I've tried to uninstall SP1 twice already, and it generated the same
    problems both times.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32 with 4 gigs of ram and an amd64x2 cpu on an
asus crosshair board. I have no problems connecting to anything, but vista
seems to be blind to that simple fact.
    I'm not connecting through a proxy .
When running sfc /scannow, which is one of a few published solutions to the
80070246 problem, I get the following error message " Windows Resource
Protection could not perform the requested operation" .

Including a small bit of my windowsupdate.log :

    <cmd_output OS="XPsp2">

Does Vista show a valid message for: net helpmsg 582

    Perhaps this?

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681388.aspx
    (Live Search for
    582 intitle:codes site:microsoft.com

If so, perhaps the download was corrupt.
Is there an alternate way of getting it?
Try getting the same thing from the Windows Update Catalog?

Also, more complete diagnostics may be available in other log(s).
Do a search for all files modified by the update to find all possible clues.
If necessary you could supplement those by invoking verbose logging
(when available) and running ProcMon to capture all file and registry accesses
to assist in an interpretation of what log messages you do get.

Depending on how you applied your maintenance that might make sense.
E.g. applying SP1 to base would supersede all other updates.

    > Going to the download center and grabbing standalone update

Need more details. That might only be a symptom of a bad User-Agent string.
In any case, "download center" is not the same thing as what I suggested:
Windows Update Catlog. You should be able to download an update for any OS
there... Is the update there? Oh. Is this still beta? You probably should not
even be posting about that here... There is probably a special newsgroup or
forum somewhere for you in that case.

This sounds contradictory. Previously you said you had already uninstalled
it and it left no maintenance.

As I said, more complete diagnostics may be available in other log(s).
E.g. above CBS is mentioned. I think that often Vista users have
found more details in CBS.log specifically but I don't know what the
context of that would have been...

FWIW here is the most helpful article I could find about that diagnostic

<title>How to use Package Manager to uninstall a package in Windows Vista</title>
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940410

    (Live Search for
    "cbs.log" site:support.microsoft.com
    )

BTW I don't have your OS, so in case someone else has a correct
version of your log(s) which would help you understand what is wrong
with yours I'm cross-posting to a Vista NG.

    Good luck

    Thanks for the reply.
    I appreciate the help.
Seems as if I'm going to have to split this post into 2 parts as I'm
exceeding the 30000 character post limit on this board:)
    So here goes part 1:

Yes - this is pretty much the message I get when running those commands
I have 2 copies of it already. both generate the same error message.
The important thing for me isn't so much installing the RC2 as properly
    uninstalling the SP1RC1.
It's after uninstalling RC1 that windows update stops working - any attempt
to use WU generating error code 0x80070246.
Attempting to install RC2 from a standalone package generates error code
    0x80070246
Attempting to install RC1 again (from a standalone package) generates error
    code 0x80070246

I'm pretty sure I had some updates installed prior to installing SP1, but I
    could be wrong.

Thanks for the tip about update catalog:)
Tried this, but packages downloaded from here simply state that "This update
does not apply to your system"
With regards to the beta status, SP1 RC1 is open, and I'm pretty sure the
problem lies with the uninstalling of that package.

    Hmm, maybe I should clarify.

I have uninstalled the SP1 RC1. It has left no obvious maintenance (to me at
    least :) )
However, after uninstalling said package, Windows update started generating
    the error code 80070246.
Any attempt to install ANY standalone update generates "This update does not
    apply to your system"
Attempting to install RC2 generates code 80070246
Attempting to reinstall RC1 generates code 80070246

I tried to uninstall SP1 RC1 a little while ago as well, but that generated
the same problems with windows update.
I then restored the vista installation (with the SP1 RC1 already installed)
through a PING 2.0 backup from my tftp server.

    According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228
SFC should generate a log file accessible by the following command
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
Running this command generates a 0 byte file in my case, but the cbs logs
    are located at that adress
If I run sfc /scannow it generates an error message that is displayed in
    the cbs logs as

And this is really odd, it's loading 6001.18000 servicing stack, but any
attempt I've made to install rc2 has generated an abort and the errorcode
    80070246.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm utterly clueless as to wtf is going on.
Anyways, I pretty much just want windows update back up and running,
everything else is just a bonus:)
