- Download/Install Windows Update v3. http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe (You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.) - Download/Install the 927891 patch. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A Reboot |

Installing the Agent fixed the problem. The installation of the Agent failed at the end but when I rebooted it was working. Before I installed the Agent I realized the windows update service was always on "initializating" state. Terrific--glad to hear it. It helps when you mark your initial question as answered--that will enable others searching for an answer to find a correct one more quickly. I am glad I could help and thank you for updating the thread. I was unable to get the Agent to install (it failed each time I tried, and rebooting was no magic bullet). Is there a way I can make use of the \wuforce command when I have the Agent installation saved as an .exe file on my hard drive, or do I need to install it from a link? I will say that I at least got to the Windows Update page itself this time, but when I tried to use it, I got the same old 0x80070715 error code. Many thanks for your assistance! |

| Re: Error Code 0x80070715
I was having the same issue using Windows Update. I would click start and then Windows Update. IE 7 would open and attempt to take me to the Windows Update page. It would just sit there for approx. three minutes and finally error out with the error message 0x80070715. I searched Google for the error message and this was the first result I found. I found other pages as well but they all basically refer to the same "Windows Update V3" process. I tried this and it didn't not work. I installed the program via command line using the /wuforce switch and that allowed the installer to launch but I then got the error code 0x80070420 when attempting to install. I checked Microsoft's website and found a page on this error message. I followed the instructions per the Microsoft documentation located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958054. I would get a message stating that the stop command was invalid. I am not too savy with all of this technical stuff but did some digging into Administrative Tools -> Services in the control panel. I found that the "Automatic Updates" service was sitting in a "Starting" state. I right clicked on it and start or stop were not an option as it was already attempting to start. I right clicked on it, clicked on properties and in the window that pops up I changed "Startup Type" from automatic to manual. I rebooted my PC and when I got back into Windows I went back to the Administrative Tools -> Services in the control panel. I then right clicked on "Automatic Updates" and clicked start. The process started and I am now sitting at the Windows Update page in IE. Hopefully this helps someone or anyone in the future. I spent about two hours on the issue and after doing this I was able to get to Windows Update just fine. |
