Windows Update fails error code 0x8000FFFF

Have error code 0x8000FFFF

Most recent Vista updates I was able to grab were on 6/17.

I have tried updating in Safe Mode, same error occurs.

Trying to uninstall the installed updates seems to fail without indicated
error, the machine reboots with everything still installed.

Everytime the machine reboots I get the "configuring updates" message.

I also tried using Windows Update Server Update Services 3.0 and that yields
the same error.

Have disabled all non-ms services in MSconfig, and disabled most startup
applications, does not help either.

Tried getting rid of SoftwareDistribution folder

Also tried net stop / start WuAuServ

Any help would be really really appreciated. I'd hate to have to flatten
this machine!
